In this lecture, viewers will be introduced to the concept of grief via the definition of the term. The instructor also mentions for the first time, the Timeline Exercise, a program she administers to her clients who are grieving. This Timeline Exercise will be exhibited fully throughout this course.
Also, in this lecture, viewers will learn the definition and a brief description of the general concept of grief.
In this section, viewers will learn The Five Stages of Grief: Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression, and Acceptance according to Dr. Elisabeth Kübler Ross.
Viewers will also learn descriptions of each of the five stages of grief and how to identify which stage of grief is being exhibited through verbal and non-verbal cues.
The Timeline Exercise is the exercise where the grieving parents are able to engage in an overview of their relationship and process their grief symptoms.
In this section, viewers will learn the materials needed to execute this exercise and what the exercise entails.
Viewers will be acquainted with Lisa and James, who serves as the example couple for this course. The instructor will illustrate their initial therapeutic interaction, which took place some months after their child's stillbirth, and discuss the data they were able to gather.
In this segment of the course, viewers will learn what is expected of clinicians during their initial session with their clients.
In this session, the instructor takes us deeper into the case study as she describes her next encounter with Lisa and James as well as the introduction of the Timeline Exercise to them.
Clinicians will learn about the realistic timeline prescribed, information gathering from Lisa and James and why it is important to explain the Timeline Exercise to their clients.

Phase 2 of this exercise begins with Lisa and James providing their feedback on Phase 1 and then transitioning into activities for Phase 2.
In this phase, the couple will engage in various activities designed to further their understanding of each other.
In this phase, demonstration is done addressing clinicians as to how they should allow the grieving parent(s) to “sit and feel” their emotions and why this is important.
In this phase, viewers will be taken through Lisa and James’ moments of intense emotions as well as their bargaining statements. Viewers will learn the best approach for handling truths and bargaining statements.
Lisa and James details their experience of delivering a stillborn and expressing their emotions, while the instructor demonstrates to clinicians how to introduce novel perspectives to grieving clients during this phase.
In this phase, Lisa and James converse about a new outlook they have regarding their circumstance.
In this phase, the sorrowful pair recognizes that although their stillborn baby has transitioned, they still remain as parents. The instructor shows them how to undertake an activity that will help them communicate with their son who has transitioned.
The instructor demonstrates the procedure of “The Ceremony” to Lisa and James and its importance. Clinicians will be taught how to implement this ceremony with their clients.
The instructor concludes her sessions with Lisa and James at this phase, by providing guidance on how to move forward in "Accepting" that their son has transitioned.
In this segment, viewers will hear about Lisa's and James' testimony.

Ms. Josephs not only utilizes knowledge from her trainings that she has undergone throughout her career, but she also uses her intuitive knowing and understanding with her clients who are grieving the loss of a child. At the end of The Grief After Stillbirth course, grieving parent(s) will be able to identify and understand the five stages of grief, Ms. Josephs 8-phase intervention for grieving parent(s) and the reasons for these interventions.
