Welcome to Graphite Pencil Drawing for the Advance Beginner! Here I'll talk about what you will experience and accomplish by taking this class.
In this section, I will walk you through which materials we will need, and which are optional.
Here I will introduce how we will be preparing our drawing surface by putting on a frame and a grid.
In this section, I will show you how to draw the image frame onto the drawing paper.
Here, I will walk you through adding the grid to the drawing paper.
Now we're ready to start drawing! I will introduce you to how we'll approach the drawing and the rationale behind it. In subsequent sections, I will walk you through the drawing step-by-step.
We're going to start the drawing here with the largest, most basic shapes of the head, muzzle and body.
In this section, we'll draw the dog's ear.
Here, we'll be starting the dog's nose by drawing the large, outer shape.
In this section, we'll finish the dog's nose by adding contours and details.
Here, we'll take some time to very accurately measure and make marks for the placement and size of the eye.
Now that we have measured where and how large the eye should be, we will draw the shapes for the eye.
In this section, we will draw the dog's mouth and add just a couple lines for markings in the fur.
Here, I'll walk you through the last steps in the drawing portion. We will lightly erase any dark drawing lines, and erase the grid lines altogether.
Now that we are done with the drawing, this video will walk you through a quick exercise to practice layering the pencils in a way that will make the dog's textures very rich and realistic.
Here, we will add our lightest layer of pencil to the top area of the ear.
Here, we will add our lightest layer of pencil to the bottom of the ear, and start in on the face.

This short recap acknowledges everything you have learned by taking this class and offers hearty congratulations on a job well done!
In Graphite Pencil for the Advanced Beginner, you will learn how to realistically copy a photo using a range of graphite pencils. My wish is that you will enjoy the process and be proud of the outcome. The spirit of the class is meant to be light and fun, but we will also focus greatly on precision and taking our time both with the drawing and adding of value and texture. The goal is to have a great experience and a new set of skills with which to walk away.
I will walk you through the entire process, from what materials you will need, to setting up your workspace and paper, to how to accurately measure and scale up. We will discuss which parts of the dog are important to measure well and what is ok to eyeball. Then we will progress into layering from light to dark with our set of graphite pencils, building rich fur texture as well as the glassiness of the eye and rubberiness of the nose. I will also address finishing touches and ways you can make your portrait "pop" and feel alive. We will walk through it together, at your pace, pausing when you wish (just pause the video whenever you want) and progressing whenever you're ready, and at a pace you choose.
When we're done, my hope is that you feel accomplished and inspired to continue exploring with graphite pencils, or any other art media that strikes your fancy. Enjoy!
