Explore visual balance in graphic design by examining symmetry, alignment, grids, movement, orientation, and the visual centre point, and learn to apply balance principles across designs.
Navigate design boards with double-click and scroll, use keyboard shortcuts for zoom and navigation, access pdf lessons and interactive worksheets, and download pdfs to save your work.
Explore the foundations of graphic design by learning theory, principles, and terms; analyze real print, web, and mobile designs to build a visual library and improve composition.
Analyze how visual weight shapes balance in graphic design by examining color contrast, symmetry and asymmetry, edge heaviness, and mosaic balance with grids.
Explore radial balance from a center point, the visual center above the physical center, and how complex shapes, textures, and edge placement affect visual weight and balance.
Discover reflectional symmetry and other types, bilateral, radial, and diagonal, and how combining them with asymmetry achieves balanced, engaging designs, including logo applications.
Explore translational symmetry, reflectional symmetry, glide reflection symmetry, and radial or rotational symmetry, and learn how overlap, depth, and perspective create balance or intentional asymmetry to evoke drama.
Explore how alignment shapes visual balance and structure in graphic design, from left and center alignments to justification and ragged edges, improving readability and legibility in editorial layouts.
Grids provide an invisible structure that guides the placement of visual elements, improving alignment, balance, and unity, with a 12-column grid, margins, gutters, and flow lines refining modular organization.
Explore three movement categories in graphic design, kinetic, rhythmic, and illusory motion, along with techniques like medium disturbance, rule of space, and motion lines to create dynamic, printable compositions.
Decide the orientation and aspect ratio at the start to boost visual balance and readability across portrait, landscape, and panoramic formats.
Align the focal point to the optical or visual center point rather than the geometric center, 5 to 10% above, and use grids to verify balance across typography and imagery.
Choose specific viewpoints to shape how viewers interpret your design, balancing subject emphasis with environment. Use angles from frog's-eye to bird's-eye and multiple viewpoints to reinforce the message.
Learn how modular grids guide magazine layouts with three-column body copy, six-by-six modules, flow lines, and the baseline grid for vertical alignment across print and web design.
Complete the graphic design theory balance course by reviewing the glossary and PDFs, taking the quiz, and exploring milanote references for inspiration and practice.
Have you ever had the feeling that while every element you use in your design looks great, overall the composition still feels off. Uneasy on the eye.
Or that the message you wanted to convey just doesn’t come through to anyone. Some elements just overpower the rest. It is - as a whole - out of balance.
These are the challenges we will solve in this part of my Design Theory Series: Mastering Visual Balance.
Throughout our lives, on every level we instinctively aim to create and maintain balance. Within and around us. Likewise, our eye is drawn to symmetry. It calms us, conveys stability, trust, worthiness, order.
Every element in a composition has a certain amount of visual weight and you need to learn how to keep them in balance to achieve a pleasing composition. This is why visual balance is so important in graphic design.
How will you improve by taking this course
By the end of this course, you will have not only the knowledge but a keen eye to measure the visual weight of each element in a composition, spot and correct imbalances. This will allow you to immediately improve the overall harmony and vibe of the composition, making it more pleasing to the eye.
What we will cover in the course
Symmetry,
Alignment,
Grids,
Movement,
Orientation,
Viewpoint,
Visual center point
and everything else that can help you to strike the right amount of balance in your designs.
We will also analyze hundreds of amazing designs from all areas of graphic design to help you easily visualize and understand all the terms and rules that are covered in the course.
Going through these examples - both good and bad - you will start to see these principles in effect, and develop a sense for the right balance that will serve you greatly throughout your creative career.
