Hello! Nice to meet you! My name is Roy.

  • What is golf?16:48

Golf is The Most Amazing Game in the World!

It has so many great features!

You play golf outside in the fresh air, in the most beautiful natural surroundings. It can be a nice game and hobby, but you can also approach it as a serious sport, depending on your personal goals.

Because of the so called 'handicap system', you can play with players of all different levels, ages and abilities. That's unique in the world of sports! You can play golf from 6 years old to 106 years old, it really can last you a lifetime!

The object of the game is to get the golf ball in the hole in as FEW shots as possible! Time is not of issue, only the amount of shots you need to get the ball into the hole.

But to get that ball into that hole, there are a lot of challenges to overcome...

Click on the video to see what the challenges of this game are!

  • What do I need to start?5:13

    Golf is played with clubs.

To start the lessons, you will need 2 types of clubs: a 'Putter' and an 'Iron'. And some (cheap) golfballs. That's all!

A Putter is designed to make the ball roll over the grass and into the hole. It is not supposed to get the ball into the air, just to get the ball rolling.

An iron should have some 'loft' on the striking area (which we call the clubface) and it points somewhat upward, so it helps to get the ball up from the ground and into the air. An iron is made to get the ball from the ground up in to the air and let it fly for shorter or longer distances, which depends on the type of iron you choose.

For chipping, like we will do in Section 2, a good choice is the so called Pitching Wedge (a type of iron), but any type of iron will do for your first practice moments.

If you don't have any of the items mentioned above, be sure to check out the 'Buying your First Golf Clubs' video in the Golf Gear module (Section 4) and the 'My First Clubs Buying Guide' in the Bonus content of Section 7.

Click on the video for more explanation.

  • Heading to the practice facilities5:17

Did you know that most Golf Clubs offer FREE practice facilities? You don't need to pay to use them and you don't even need a membership at that club. You are free to use their practice areas, you only need to pay some rent for the balls you use, but that's not more than a couple of bucks. So you can start your Golf Journey almost for free!

Most Golf Clubs/ Golf Courses have 2 kinds of practice areas: The Practice Green and The Driving Range.

On the Practice Green, you can practice your Chipping (short distance shots) and Putting (rolling the ball into the hole from the moment it is on the green).

The Green is the very very short grass area around the hole. You are only allowed to make rolling shots on this very vulnerable grass, NO Chipping, Pitching or Full Swing shots from Green! Only do chipping outside the borders of the Green, where the grass is a bit higher. Here it's allowed to damage the grass. On the Green itself, you are not supposed to damage the grass (think of it as a snooker table surface).

On the Driving Range, you can practice your Half Swing and Full Swing (longer distance shots). It usually has mats or grass areas to put your ball on. From there, you hit the ball towards the wide open area in front of you, that is sometimes protected with high nets or fences to keep the balls from flying into houses or people.
