+ GIMP 2.10 Selection Tools
8 lectures 28:58

In this lecture, I go over the first selection tool (the Rectangle Select tool), while also covering the purpose of selection tools and what the tool options mean for selection tools in general. Plus, I show you what each of the tool options under the Rectangle Selection Tool do to edit the settings of or enhance the performance of this commonly used tool.

GIMP 2.10 Selection Tools - Rectangle Select Tool

The ellipse select tool allows you to select areas or objects of your image by drawing an ellipse or circular selection area. This tool has all the same qualities as the rectangle select tool, apart from its shape (of course).

GIMP 2.10 Selection Tools - Ellipse Select Tool

In this lecture, I cover the Free Select Tool (also known as the lasso tool), demonstrating how the tool can be used to freehand draw selection areas.

GIMP 2.10 Selection Tools - Free Select Tool

The fuzzy select tool allows you to select contiguous regions of color in your image - and is a great selection tool for making intelligent selections on your composition. Learn how to wield this tool to your advantage in this selection tools lecture.

GIMP 2.10 Selection Tools - Fuzzy Select Tool

The Select by Color Tool is very similar to the fuzzy select tool, only it selects ALL instances of the color your choose throughout the image. This is a great way to single out any color or shade of color for selecting. Learn more about this tool in this lecture.

GIMP 2.10 Selection Tools - Select by Color Tool

This lecture covers the Intelligent Scissors tool - yet another way to intelligently select certain pixels or areas within your image using GIMP 2.10. Learn how this tool's algorithm allows you to draw a line that "snaps" to objects in your image for a quick selection.

GIMP 2.10 Selection Tools - Intelligent Scissors Tool

The last of the selection tools, and of the intelligent selection tools, is the Foreground Select Tool. This lecture demonstrates how this tool can be used to easily select and separate foreground objects from the background. You can then use the new selection area to add a variety of effects, manipulations, adjustments, etc. to your selected object.

GIMP 2.10 Selection Tools - Foreground Select Tool
In this assignment, you'll practice using the Foreground Select Tool by removing the background of the provided image. You will also be briefly introduced to a new concept - the layer mask - in order to perform this task (I go over layer masks in more depth in a later Section/Lecture).

This lecture provides the first in-depth look at the all-important Paths tool in GIMP 2.10. I talk the tool's ability to draw curves, as well as how you can find the Paths dialogue (a.k.a. Paths dock) to customize, duplicate, or perform other actions on paths you draw.

GIMP 2.10: Master the Paths Tool Part 1

It's time to dig in to using the Paths tool! I'll show you how to prepare your image for tracing with the paths tool for the best result. Plus, I cover concepts like creating anchor points between path segments, drawing curves from those segments, and creating a custom, complex shape with the tool. I will of course provide tips, insights, and useful shortcuts along the way.

GIMP 2.10: Master the Paths Tool Part 2

Drawing the path is just the beginning. In this lecture, I delve into manipulating your path after it has been drawn. I show you how to adjust the path in the Paths dialogue, and how to refine the path using anchor points and handles. The lessons learned in this video allow you to make more precise curves - upping the value of your designs.

GIMP 2.10: Master the Paths Tool Part 3

After you have drawn and refined your path, you can perform a variety of actions or apply effects to your path. I show you how to create selections from a path, which allows you to cut out complex shapes drawn with the path, plus how to export your path out of one composition and import it into another. Additionally, I introduce you to performing transformations on your path.

GIMP 2.10: Master the Paths Tool Part 4

Learn how to draw a path and stroke the path to create advanced designs with complex shapes in this lesson. You can also duplicate the path and create fills, dotted lines, and other awesome effects.

GIMP 2.10: Master the Paths Tool Part 5

In this lecture, we'll finish up our composition by applying a few more effects with the paths tool. From outlining a subject in your photo to editing an area of a photo within the path area you drew, the paths tool provides various options for compositions. I also cover a few additional concepts that are important for the paths tool that I did not cover in previous lectures.

In this lecture, I go over three tools found in the GIMP Toolbox - including the Eyedropper tool (i.e. Color Picker), Zoom Tool, and Measure Tool. I also show you how to use the new "straighten" feature within the Measure Tool that was released as a new feature in GIMP 2.10.

GIMP 2.10: Eye Dropper, Zoom, and Measure Tools
+ GIMP 2.10 Transform Tools
12 lectures 23:38

The ubiquitous move tool is probably my most widely used tool when working in GIMP. The tool is a simple way to move layers around your canvas - though there are certainly some extra features built into this handy tool.

GIMP 2.10 Transform Tools - Move Tool

The alignment tool is a new tool that rolled out with GIMP 2.10 and helped make the program noticeably more powerful and useful. This tool allows you to align your active layer, as well as align multiple layers or objects at once to your canvas. There are a variety of alignment options and settings as well that enhance the functionality of this tool.

GIMP 2.10 Transform Tools - Alignment Tool

The crop tool is a simple way to crop out unwanted objects in your composition, change the aspect ratio of your image, or to shrink down the boundary of your canvas. Learn how to use this common photo editing tool.

GIMP 2.10 Transform Tools - Crop Tool
Use a combination of the straight feature found in the measure tool and the top tool to fix the crooked horizon found in the photograph for this assignment.

2 questions

Simply put - the rotate tool allows you to rotate your active layer. You can rotate at any minute angle, or in predetermined increments for more accuracy. You can also set the interpolation quality prior to the transformation to maintain maximum image quality once the pixels have been moved.

GIMP 2.10 Transform Tools - Rotate Tool

The scale tool allows you to scale your active image to above or below its original size on the canvas. This is not to be confused with the Image>Scale Image feature, which allows you to scale the entire composition. However, the Scale Tool also allows you to scale a path or a selection - depending on which setting you have the tool on.

GIMP 2.10 Transform Tools - Scale Tool

The shear tool, though not used in many instances, allows you to transform your image by sliding one side of the image in one direction and the other side of the image in the opposite direction (basically creating a rhombus shape).

GIMP 2.10 Transform Tools - Shear Tool

The Handle Transform allow you to deform your layer or image via the use of handles, which you set yourself. This can create some very interesting results!

GIMP 2.10 Transform Tools - Handle Transform Tool

The Perspective Tool allows you to easily transform the perspective of a layer, which comes in handy when you are overlaying one image on top of the other and the perspective don't match up. In this lecture, I provide an example of adding an image to a laptop screen to make it appear as if the laptop screen is displaying the image.

GIMP 2.10 Transform Tools - Perspective Tool

This lecture covers the Flip Tool, which allows you to easily flip a layer in any direction. Essentially, you are relocating pixels to the opposite side of the layer whenever you flip a layer.

GIMP 2.10 Transform Tools - Flip Tool

The Unified Transform Tool, which was added in GIMP 2.10, combines all of the most commonly used transform tools found in GIMP to create one powerful, easy to use tool. You can scale a layer, change its perspective, rotate it, and move it - all within the same tool.

GIMP 2.10 Transform Tools - Unified Transform Tool

The Cage Transform Tool can be a powerful tool for those who properly know how to use it. This tool allows you to separate an area of an image with line segments and nodes, which will then transform those areas of the image as you move the nodes to new locations. This is a great way to make transformations to objects or people within the image.

GIMP 2.10 Transform Tools - Cage Transform Tool

This lecture covers another powerful tool that was introduced with GIMP 2.10. That is the Warp Transform tool, which allows you to warp pixels of your image in a variety of ways (i.e. enlarge, shift, shrink, etc.). This tool is definitely worth experimenting with!

In this lecture, I provide a brief introduction to the Text Tool, which I will cover in more depth in future lectures. This is a great starting point for beginners who want to get acquainted with this commonly used GIMP 2.10 tool.

GIMP 2.10: Introduction to the Text Tool

This lecture provides an introduction to the text box, as well as the two different styles of text box (dynamic vs. fixed) where you will be typing and editing your text.

GIMP 2.10 Advanced Text Tool: The Text Box (Dynamic vs. Fixed)

Text layers are an important concept when it comes to creating text as they differentiate from regular layers in GIMP. In this lecture, I help you understand what makes text layers different and how not to get confused when trying edit or work with them.

GIMP 2.10 Advanced Text Tool: Text Layers

There are a wide variety of things you can do to edit your text using the Tool Options, and I go through each of those things in this lecture line by line. It's time you finally knew what all of those fancy settings were for!

GIMP 2.10 Advanced Text Tool: Customizing Text With the Tool Options

The text tool box is similar to the Tool Options, though there are some slight differences between the two that are good to know (to save you hours of frustration). I cover editing your text using the floating tool box in this lecture.

GIMP 2.10 Advanced Text Tool: Customizing Text With the Text Tool Box

Right clicking on your text box brings up the Text Context Menu, which opens up a whole new world of possible text settings and effects. I explain each of the menu options in this lecture and demonstrate what they do to your text.

GIMP 2.10 Advanced Text Tool: Text Context Menu

There are plenty of cool effects you can add to your text - including the very useful drop shadow. I show you how to add effects to your text in this lecture, while also covering any other features I have found to be important to know about the text tool that weren't already covered in this section.

GIMP 2.10 Paint Tools - Bucket Fill Tool

The gradient tool (formally known as the blend tool) allows you to use two or more colors to create a blending of colors using a variety of blend modes. GIMP 2.10 comes standard with the Live Gradient feature, which allows you to make adjustments to your gradient on the canvas prior to applying the changes. Take a look at this tool in this lecture.

GIMP 2.10 Paint Tools - Gradient Tool

The pencil tool, which is the first of the brush tools, can be used to draw pixels that do not need or should not have any fuzzy edges or anti-aliasing. This is the perfect tool for pixel art!

GIMP 2.10 Paint Tools - Pencil Tool

The paintbrush tool is one of the most important features in GIMP, and certainly one of the most commonly used. In this lecture, I provide an introduction to this versatile tool - showing off some of its powerful and practical features.

GIMP 2.10 Paint Tools - Paintbrush Tool

The next brush tool is one that removes pixels from your image moreso than draws them. I am talking, of course, about the eraser tool. There is also a hidden feature - the unerase feature - that allows you to bring pixels back once you've erased them. Get more familiar with this tool in this GIMP 2.10 lecture.

This lecture covers the Clone Tool, which is used to clone pixel areas in your image and paint them to a new destination area. Learn the ins and outs of this tool to clone out objects in your image for photo manipulation.

GIMP 2.10 Paint Tools - Clone Tool

Like the Clone Tool, the Heal Tool allows you to clone pixel areas from a source area and paint them on a destination area. However, this tool is a bit more sophisticated and advanced in that it uses an algorithm to use surrounding pixels from the destination area to create a better, more blended result. See this tool in action in this GIMP 2.10 lecture.

GIMP 2.10 Paint Tools - Heal Tool

The Perspective Clone Tool works in the same way as the Clone Tool, though it also has the built-in capability of allowing you to change the perspective of the destination area where you are painting in order to match the source area's perspective to the destination area. This is great for cloning photos or areas with different perspectives.

This lecture covers the Blur/Sharpen Tool, which allows you to blur or sharpen a pixel area using any of the brush heads found in GIMP. This is perfect for when you want to blur or sharpen a particular area without creating the effect over the entire image.

GIMP 2.10 Paint Tools - Blur/Sharpen Tool

This lecture covers two separate tools - the Smudge Tool, which allows you to blend neighboring pixels together as you paint to create a "smudged" effect, and the Dodge/Burn Tool. The Dodge/Burn Tool allows you to lighten or darken the pixel areas you paint with a brush head, allowing you to perform tasks such as contouring a model's complexion or adding highlights and shadows.

You're now familiar with layers - let's get into selection areas. This lecture covers contour lines, the lines that determine the boundary of a selection area, and marching ants, the moving dotted lines that show you where the contour line is.

GIMP 2.10 Selection Areas: Contour Lines and Marching Ants

Like all of the tools in GIMP, selection tools come with Tool Options that allow you to customize the selection areas. This feature adds functionality and flexibility to the selection tools.

GIMP 2.10 Selection Areas: Selection Tool Options

By isolating areas of your image with selections, you can keep your painting or image adjustments confined within a specific area. I cover this topic here in this lecture and show why this feature of the selection areas can create some awesome effects.

GIMP 2.10 Selection Areas: Painting and Adjusting Selection Areas

From deselecting selections, to selecting everything in your composition or image window, to drawing abstract selection areas, this lecture covers some of the more nuanced topics of basic selections.

GIMP 2.10 Selection Areas: Advanced Selections

In the previous selection areas lectures, I discussed contour lines and how they separate areas that are selected from areas that are not. In this lecture, I delve more into that concept, clarifying that contour lines actually separate pixels that are more than half selected from pixels that are less than half selected. In other words, I discuss how pixel values play a role in selection areas.

GIMP 2.10 Advanced Selection Areas: Part 1

In this advanced selection areas lecture, I show you how the quick mask can be a valuable tool for previewing pixel values in a selection area, as well as determining the hardness or definiteness of the boundary of your selection area.

GIMP 2.10 Advanced Selection Areas: Part 2

In this lecture, I show you how to freehand draw selection areas, important selections from one composition to another, and adjust the opacity of the areas within the selection areas you draw. Plus, I show you how to add transparency to your images and demonstrate the difference between working with an image with and without an alpha channel.

GIMP 2.10 Advanced Selection Areas: Part 3

In this final advanced selection areas lecture, I demonstrate how to grow and shrink your selection areas. Plus, I show you how to invert selection areas, how to draw image borders, how to add selection areas as a layer mask, and how to use the Selection dockable dialogue.

GIMP 2.10 introduced a new tool called the Vignette Tool that allows you to easily add vignettes to your images. For those of you who don't know, a vignette is essentially a subtle frame that goes along the outside of your image. Vignettes are typically used to draw the viewer's eye to a particular spot in the image, or to frame the main object/subject in your photos. I show you how to use this tool to get the best out of your vignettes in this lecture.
