Why should you take a class on keyword research? What will you be able to do after taking this class?
The first step in your keyword research process is brainstorming a list of possible phrases someone might use to find your company online. Here's how to do that- with an example company.
After you've brainstormed a list of possible keywords, clarify and focus those phrases. Next we'll collect data to see which phrases are searched for more (or at all).
The best way to get keyword data is from Google Ad's Keyword Planner tool- if you have access to it. If you don't, there's other options for you.
Another way you can get data for your keywords is using Google Trends. This free tool will help you see if other people are using the phrases you think customers might be using to find your business.
Bing Webmaster Tools has data for you to use in keyword research. You might not care about "ranking" on Bing, but you can use their data to tell you the keywords for which you should focus on in Google.
Once you know what phrases your customers might use to find your business (based on data, rather than conjecture) save yourself a lot of time and organize this list so you can know where each topic should receive a focus on your website.
Keyword research is only the beginning of an SEO campaign. Here's some things you can do with the keywords you've found (besides adding them to your website).
Don't begin to spend time (or money) on an SEO campaign without first doing some keyword research. This will tell you if your customers are turning to the search engines to find your business. If they are, keyword research will help you know what phrases they might use to find you online. With this information, you can not only add the proper phrases to your website, but begin the many other things required for a successful SEO campaign (hint: there's a lot more to SEO than putting the "right" words on a page).
