Welcome to the course. I do hope it gives you the confidence and technical knowledge to start filming yourself and showcasing your business on social media. It is designed to give you all the tips and tricks you need to ensure your videos are that bit more professional looking than your competition! Everything taught in the following lessons comes from a BBC and ITV trained broadcast journalist and camera operator. Have a listen to the welcome video and enjoy getting to grips with your smartphone, many thanks.
Let's begin thinking about how to turn your smartphone into a video camera, with a few simple steps and a checklist to help you along the way. Make sure you have your phone on you whilst watching this video, so that you can follow the pointers along the way. Please note that certain elements on the Checklist are explained in another video later on in the course.
In this lesson, we take you through the various formats and styles of video in-keeping with each of the social platforms. At the end of the lesson, think about your own audience, the device they tend to use and the platform you think they are most likely to be on. These details should inform your video format and style going forwards. And take note over the next week or so of your own scrolling behaviour through social media. What gets your attention? What makes you stop scrolling and start watching?
Gain confidence to speak on camera with these top tips. At the end of this lesson, we would urge you to spend some time practising. You don't need to publish anything at this time. Just keep talking to camera and filming yourself. The more you do it, the more comfortable you will become with the process and the more used to seeing and hearing yourself on camera you will become.
As an ex-ITV and BBC TV Producer and Camera Woman, Helen takes you through her top tips for better filming practice when it comes to your smartphone. Don't feel overwhelmed by all the information. Try and watch this video a couple of times, and then practise the techniques a few at a time. It will get easier the more you film.
If you are enjoying the learning process of filming, or really getting the hang of it, here are some more advanced techniques to try out to make your videos even more professional looking.
If there's one piece of equipment we recommend you buy, to elevate your smartphone filming productions, it's a microphone. Here Helen takes you through the basics of understanding and using microphones, why they are important and what to look for. At the end of all three lessons, there is a download with recommendations for brands and models of microphones.
Smartphones can really struggle when it comes to lighting. Let's look at some of the basics of using lights and the sort of lighting equipment you could invest in if you wanted to. Again there is a download at the end of lesson three, with all of our equipment brand recommendations in it.
Stability is an important part of videography, whether you want to move the camera, or you don't! Our full download with equipment and brand recommendations is attached to this lesson. Take a look and see what might fit your business and the filming style you are developing.
Should you subtitle your videos? Subtitling can be a time consuming job, but a subtitled video is much more accessible for a wider range of people, and is more attractive to social media because of the huge numbers of people who watch content without the sound on.
The company recommended in this film is rev.com who can produce a transcript of your video (useful for turning it into a blog for your website or newsletter) or an .srt file (explained in the video) for you to upload separately.
If you are worried about what you're going to say to camera, and how you are going to say it, writing a simple script and using a teleprompter app can be very worthwhile. Here we have put together a download with all of the smartphone filming apps we recommend. Have a play around with some of them and see which works for you, and your business.
Last but not least, you want to know how to publish your video onto the right platform. Use our download below to help you through the process.
