What Spirit guides are
There are 3 kinds of beings that people call Spirit guides:
Former humans, often family members and friends in Spirit
Their purpose is now to guide you from Spirit
Often not with you your whole life
E.g. my Mum and brother Anthony
Not usually at the forefront
Distinct, spiritually-evolved entities or groups of beings separate from you that may never have had human form
E.g. Abraham, SETH, etc.
These entities are often channeled to bring knowledge to humanity
Energy that is facets or aspects of your own higher self
Often taken on archetypal characters/roles
A way for you to connect with your own soul
A way for you to guide yourself through the journey you’ve chosen for this lifetime
Spirit guides typically don’t change over time -- in the sense that your main guides will always be with you.
Certain guides or aspects may be more pronounced at times, but your main group of guides stays pretty constant. (It’s like a group of friend who you know for years, but may have stronger relationships with different people over time).
As your guides are part of you, they are always part of you, even if how they present themselves changes.
Why you need to know your guides
It allows you to connect with a source of information that’s for your highest good
It can provide healing, safety, nurturing, nourishment, resourcing
It helps you wake up to the larger reality of life and existence
It helps you fulfill what you came here to do and learn and experience
How many Spirit guides do you have?
Different sources vary widely - 1, 2, 5, 7, a band of inner guides and a band of outer guides
It doesn’t have to be this complicated
We don’t all have the same number of friends or family members -- we don’t all have the same number of guides at any given moment
It’s different for different people, depending on where you are in your development and what you need
Their common roles/archetypes
What I was taught and the model I work with:
Gatekeeper guide
Master Teacher guide
Handyman/philosopher guide
Doctor/physician/healer/chemist guide
Native guide
Joy guide
Notes about these roles:
You may or may not meet all of these guides.
Some may play more than one role. E.g. Gatekeeper and philosopher
You may have more than one guide in some of the categories. E.g. Doctor/healer
It’s all OK
How you get to know your guides
Meditation is key
Relationships take time to build trust
You have to put in the effort
Your guides will never abandon you - even if you don’t talk to them for years
Even if you don’t know them yet, your guides are still there - your higher self is always looking out for you
Once you do the Spirit guide meditation, you can go back to it at any time to connect again with the guide you met or meet new ones
You can connect to your guides in your daily life through intention
When you do specific kinds of work, call on your guides to help you
E.g. Gatekeeper for mediumship, Doctor/healer for healing work
Ask your guides for a sign or symbol so you know they’re checking in with you
E.g. a flower, song lyrics, number, repeated numbers, etc.
Use this as a sign you’re on the right track
Spirit guide meditation
This meditation uses the imagery of going up a staircase to help you raise and clear your vibration so you can connect with your guides.
Going up the staircase takes you out of the everyday concerns of mundane life. You release your stress and worries, allowing yourself to focus and relax. Getting quiet inside so you can transport yourself to a place where you can connect with your guides is important.
The “beautiful place” you enter through the door at the top of the staircase can be anywhere that feels good to you, that makes you smile when you think of it.
If you don’t immediately see a guide moving towards you, it’s OK. You can have a variety of different experiences in this exercise.
Guides often show up initially as hooded, fuzzy/out of focus, or as an eye or other part of a person
Allow yourself to just be in this place and be open to the experience
Allow yourself to be surprised
Try not to judge yourself or your experience.
If you notice your mind has wandered off, allow your focus to come back to the sound of my voice and to your breath. Refocus and continue. It’s OK.
The meditation
Sit comfortably, but erect. Feet on the floor, hands in your lap.
Breathe.
Imagine white light filling your body with every exhalation.
With every inhalation, all anxiety, stress and tension leaves your body.
As you exhale, you are filled with light, from your root chakra, building and growing as it travels up your spine, up to your crown chakra and out of the top of your skull.
See yourself standing at the foot of a staircase. However the staircase shows up in your mind’s eye is right.
Put your foot on the first step and begin to climb the stairs.
Take another step and, as you do, you become more relaxed.
With each step you climb higher and higher, and become more relaxed and at ease.
Continue climbing up the stairs for the next few breaths, getting more and more relaxed with each step.
As you begin to approach the stairway, you see a door.
As you get closer to it, it becomes clearer.
When you are in front of it, you notice the doorknob and a keyhole.
In your hand, there is a key.
Put the key into the lock on the door and turn it.
The door unlocks.
Open the door and step across the threshold, to the world on the other side.
It is a place of beauty that resonates deeply within you. You know you are safe here.
Continue moving forward into this place and take in the feeling of it.
As you are absorbing the love and beauty, you see a figure moving toward
you. This is one of your spirit guides.
As they get closer, take in their appearance and the energy they carry with them. Make a mental note of this feeling so you can recognize it when you return.
Feel the warmth of the tremendous love they have for you.
As you approach each other, greet them. Sit down together or go for a walk.
Ask them about the role they play in your life.
You can talk, or just be together.
We will stay here for a while, to allow you time with your guide.
When it feels like time to leave, ask them for a way to connect with them again—some kind of identifying characteristic such as a name, a symbol or
even just a color.
Thank your guide for being here with you.
See the door you came through. Step back through the doorway and close the door behind you, knowing you can return any time you’d like.
Being to descend the staircase, one step at a time
Down, down, step by step.
With each step, you begin to become more aware of your surroundings.
Allow yourself to notice the sounds in the room around you, the feeling of air on your skin, the feeling of your bottom in your seat, your feet on the floor, your hands in your lap.
As you reach the bottom of the staircase, your presence returns back to the chair you are sitting in.
Become aware of your body, wiggle your fingers and toes, and open your eyes, feeling awake and energized.

Here are several bonus materials to help you on your journey of connecting with your Spirit Guides.
Do you want to receive guidance throughout your life on matters related to your spiritual development, career, health and heart?
Your Spirit guides can be a wonderful source of information, encouragement, guidance and support.
But you have to know who they are and develop a relationship with them.
Since I began developing my mediumship abilities in 2001, I’ve had years to connect with and deepen my relationship with my Spirit guides. I’ve also helped dozens of people connect with their own guides — both through mediumship and intuitive readings and by leading them through a meditation so they can meet and begin a relationship of their own.
I have a slightly different take on Spirit guides than some teachers. I believe they’re part of your higher self. We connect with them as individual personalities in order to connect with different aspects of our own soul.
In this online class we’ll cover:
What Spirit guides are and aren’t (at least not usually)
Why you have them
Their role in your development
How to get to know them
A Spirit guide meditation in which you’ll meet one or more guides

What students say:
"This is a great course for understanding more about your guides, the different types of guides and how to connect with one of your guides."
"This class was a great and easy way to learn about our spirit guides and their various roles in our lives. I especially enjoyed the meditation where we were able to meet our own guides. That was very powerful. Joanna is a great teacher and listener, with a fun and breezy approach to the mysteries of life. I highly recommend this class as well as her other classes, too. You won't be disappointed."
