Here, we introduce you to the session's objectives and offer a glimpse into the journey ahead—exploring the world of geopolitical risk, its impact on global markets, and the strategies we’ll cover for managing uncertainty. With a professional yet engaging tone, we set the foundation for what promises to be an insightful, interactive course designed to equip you with the tools and knowledge to navigate today’s complex geopolitical landscape.
Introduction to Section 1, covering the importance of managing geopolitical risks, session goals, and the agenda. By the end of this section, participants will understand the purpose of the session, the goals they’ll achieve, and how the training will proceed, helping them set expectations.
This section introduces the concept of geopolitical risks, types of risks, and their impact on global markets. Real-world examples make concepts relatable, with engagement prompts to involve participants. Participants will be able to define various geopolitical risks, understand their impact on global markets, and relate theoretical concepts to real-world scenarios.
This section focuses on recognising geopolitical risks by monitoring key factors and using analytical tools. Case studies, like the Russia-Ukraine conflict, illustrate risk identification and its real-world implications. By the end of this section, participants will know how to identify key geopolitical risk indicators, apply risk identification tools, and draw insights from case studies.
This quiz with five questions reinforces core concepts. It ensures participants understand the material before moving forward. Participants will have reviewed and consolidated their understanding of key concepts, helping them feel confident before progressing.
This section covers using PESTLE and SWOT models to evaluate risk probability and impact. An interactive exercise and recap encourage the application of these tools. Participants will be able to assess geopolitical risks with PESTLE and SWOT, evaluate risks by probability and impact, and apply these skills to scenarios with confidence.
In this interactive exercise, participants will apply the PESTLE and SWOT frameworks to a geopolitical risk scenario involving economic sanctions due to political instability (e.g., sanctions on Russia after the Ukraine conflict). Drawing on the "Assessing & Measuring Geopolitical Risk" section, participants will spend 1 hour and 45 minutes working through each analysis phase to deepen their understanding of risk assessment.
PESTLE Analysis: In the first 15 minutes, participants will use PESTLE, with options to add ‘M’ for Media and an extra ‘E’ for Ethics, examining factors like political, economic, and social impacts.
SWOT Analysis: Next, 15 minutes will be spent organising PESTLEEM findings into a SWOT format, categorising the scenario’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats.
Risk Probability & Impact: For the following 15 minutes, participants will map their findings on an impact chart, evaluating each factor’s likelihood and potential impact.
Analysis & Reflection: Lastly, 15 minutes will be dedicated to analysing the “big picture” of findings and preparing a 200-300 word reflection summarising key risks, opportunities, and organisational responses.
Deliverables
Participants will submit a completed PESTLE and SWOT analysis (structured as tables) along with a written reflection covering key findings, preparation strategies, and broader insights for future geopolitical risk assessments.
By the end of this exercise, participants will confidently use PESTLE and SWOT for geopolitical analysis, assess risk probability and impact, and generate actionable insights for strategic planning.
Participants learn about strategies for managing risks, such as diversification, contingency planning, and scenario analysis, with a practical case study for illustration. After this section, participants will be equipped to select and apply risk management strategies, drawing lessons from case studies to inform their own practices.
This Risk Mitigation Exercise is designed to help participants develop strategic responses to identified geopolitical risks, using insights from previous PESTLE and SWOT analyses. Over 2 hours, participants will move through stages of planning, diversification, partnership formation, and scenario development, creating a comprehensive risk mitigation strategy. By the end of this exercise, participants will be adept at integrating PESTLE insights into practical risk mitigation strategies, creating contingency plans, and formulating adaptable approaches to manage geopolitical risks effectively.
A multiple-choice quiz reviews risk mitigation, contingency planning, scenario analysis, and stakeholder engagement. Participants will strengthen their understanding of key mitigation strategies, solidifying knowledge for practical application.
