Sample Questions & Detailed Explanations

Question:

In a microservice architecture, it is crucial to manage service versions effectively to avoid breaking changes that could impact clients. Consider a deployment scenario where multiple microservices are being updated simultaneously. What is the most effective strategy to deploy new service versions without causing downtime and ensuring backward compatibility?

Selections:

  • A) Deploy all services simultaneously to minimize version mismatch.

  • B) Utilize blue/green deployments for zero-downtime updates.

  • C) Update services sequentially, starting with the least critical one.

  • D) Maintain a single version and update it incrementally.

Detailed Explanations:

  • A) Incorrect. Deploying all services simultaneously increases the risk of system-wide failure and does not guarantee backward compatibility.

  • B) Correct. Blue/green deployments involve running two identical production environments, only one of which serves live production traffic. This allows for testing in the idle environment and easy rollback if needed, thus ensuring zero downtime.

  • C) Incorrect. Updating services sequentially can still cause downtime and does not address the issue of ensuring backward compatibility.

  • D) Incorrect. Maintaining a single version and incrementally updating it does not provide the isolation and quick rollback capabilities essential for zero-downtime deployments.
