What you'll learn

  • Understand the 4-20 mA current loop — signal ranges, LRV/URV, loop wiring, and why it is the field standard
  • Explain the operation of pressure, temperature, level, and flow instruments used on gas turbine packages
  • Operate and interpret speed pickups, vibration probes, and flame detectors on running gas turbines
  • Understand servovalves, actuators, and final control elements — how control signals become valve movement
  • Calibrate field transmitters correctly — zero, span, 5-point checks, and as-found/as-left documentation
  • Troubleshoot instrument loops from the field device back to the control system
  • Understand Motor Control Center (MCC) fundamentals — starters, protection, and motor-driven auxiliaries

Course content

17 sections • 25 lectures • 4h 29m total length
  • Introduction8:28

Requirements

  • Basic electrical knowledge — voltage, current, and resistance (Ohm's law) — is helpful but not essential
  • No prior gas turbine experience required; fundamentals are explained from the ground up
  • A general interest in industrial instrumentation, controls, or field engineering
  • No special software or tools needed — just a willingness to learn

Description

Master the instrumentation devices and sensors that keep your gas turbine running smoothly, safely and reliably.

In any site, whether a power plant, or a gas compression station, a gas turbine is only as dependable as the instruments that measure, control, and protect it. Every successful start, every safe trip, and every stable run depends on sensors and final control devices working exactly as intended. This course gives engineers and technicians a thorough, practical understanding of those devices — how they work, how they are wired, and how they are calibrated and verified in the field.

Across fifteen detailed modules, you will work through the complete instrumentation set found on a typical gas turbine package. We begin with the 4-20mA current loop — the signal standard that ties the whole system together — then move sensor by sensor through pressure and temperature measurement, including Thermocouples and RTDs. From there we cover position and control devices: Moog Servovalves, LVDTs and RVDTs, magnetic speed pick-ups, and solenoid valves.

We then turn to the safety and protection systems that every turbine depends on: ignition spark plugs, flame detectors and scanners, gas detection sensors, and fire and heat detectors — including the voting logic that prevents false trips and false agent release.

Who this course is for:

  • Instrumentation and control (I&C) technicians who maintain, calibrate, or troubleshoot gas turbine field devices
  • Field service and commissioning engineers working on gas turbine packages who want a deeper understanding of the sensors and final control elements they handle
  • Maintenance and reliability personnel who want to move beyond simply replacing parts to understanding how each device works and fails
  • Electrical and mechanical engineers transitioning into power generation, oil & gas, or rotating equipment industries
  • Engineering students and graduates seeking practical, field-oriented knowledge of gas turbine instrumentation not usually taught in the classroom
