This is the intro of the course, I show everything what we will create during the lessons.
To know the user interface and where we will going to work is crucial to start our Inkscape journey.
The user interface is quite similar to other design programs, but Inkscape is a vector program. In this lesson I will teach You about this and the mindset and method of creating shapes and objects in Inkscape.
Everything you draw in Inkscape will be built up from several objects usually. In this lesson we learn to deal with more objects in the same drawing.
Color is a very important aspect of a game! And in Inkscape it is used differently than in other programs. Let's get the hang of it in this lesson!
Of course to create anything useful for our game we need more complex shapes than simple squares and circles. Using the path operations is an easy way to create them.
Back to colors again: gradients are there to create a more realistic look than simple flat colors.
And thna we learn about groups, to keep your selected objects together.
The highest form of creating and refining shapes in Inkscape is through path modification with the Node editor. You will learn to have absolute control over the shapes.
Now that you learned a lot about Inkscape, let's put all the knowledge together, and create a cartoon bomb! As we will use all the tools we learned so far, feel free to go back to the previous videos if something is not clear. This is the time to learn and practice all the basics of Inkscape drawing!
Bitmap images are easy to deal with, but they are not scalable, and can be a bit heavy.
SVG -Scalable Vector Graphics - is a widely used format for mobile games. And guess what: it is the native format of Inkscape!
Adding text to your game is the first step to create a GUI and buttons.
Aligning your elements is very important to create clean visuals. We will learn that while creating a game menu from our buttons.
Button states are a simple way to tell the user which option is selected in the menu. And a good oportunity for us to practice modifying existing elements in Inkscape.
Every video game needs a good visual style, and having the matching buttons is halfway there! Let's make some different styles for the same simple buttons!
Basic grass platform for a platform game. Hey, we have to start somewhere, don't we? :)
A lesson about being resourceful: how to tile and reuse our basic platform.
And again: how to modify our basic platform to create additional mutations to set a different mood. We create a lava and a snow platform here.
To practice character animation in Inkscape, we create a top down shooter character - with it's surprisingly simple animation loop.
Designing a character limb-by-limb with our future game and animation purposes in mind.
Posing our character: directions, jump, run.
Before animating our complex character, let's create a simple slimey enemy and it's simple walk loop - just to understand how animation works in Inkscape.
Setting up and understanding a proper walk cycle.
Finishing our animation. A lot of work, but all worth it :)
You didn't think, that backgrounds only consist form background didn't you?
Tiling is your friend: it saves you time and resources.
Now we add foreground and middle ground elements to finish up the look of the game.
And again: being resourceful! Let's create an (almost) brand new background from our previous environment.
A small lecture about the best thing about Inkscape: versatility and modularity!
After showing you all the possible examples with Inkscape, in this lecture I talk about a real life game project, so you can see how al of this is coming together!
While there are ample game assets available for download, you may still have trouble finding ones that fit the game you’re building. That’s when Inkscape, a free vectors graphic program, truly earns its stripes. Dive into this quick 4.5-hour course, and learn to create scalable, highly versatile game assets usable in 2D mobile games and much more.
All the assets created in the videos are yours with the course! That means 30+ unique elements to use in games or experiment with!
What will we create?
Create custom 2D game art in Inkscape w/ 4.5 hours of content
Craft art for animations, platforms, characters & more
Ensure your assets are scalable & versatile, usable on any device & at any resolution
Have stunning graphics on hand for use in any games
Improve your general game design skills with real life examples
And remember: I am here to teach and help you! If you have any question, just ask! I will add new courses and resources time-to-time!
