Hi I am Cynologist Bart de Gols. I am the founder of the Innovative Sport Dog Community and the CEO of Tactical K9 Solutions. I want to welcome you to this video Series From Tyrant to Teacher, Foundation of Animal Behavior part 1, were I will teach you the science based fundamental knowledge of animal behavior and dog training. Over the 30 years that I have been working and Training with Dogs I have studied and I have tried almost every method and training system out there. I found good things in all of them but also flaws.
As an outcome of my findings I developed not a training method or system but rather a “life Style” in how to build a relationship with dogs, especially working dogs, in such a way wolves would do in the wild, with the goal to build a motivation in working WITH me rather then for me because I had something tangible to offer or working for me out of avoidance of a correction.
It is in this “Relationship Building Life Style” I will teach you many theories about how animal learn and training techniques that will contribute to achieve the ultimate goal, a relationship in where the dog is fully engaged with you and want to work with you because he wants to, not because you ask him to.
In this lecture we will have a deeper look into the domestication process of the Canis Lupus Familiaris or modern dog. We will learn about the different theories, look at the studie of Dr. Veeramah and have a look at the genetic differences between Wolf and Dog.
In this lecture we will study how animal learn, we will take a deep dive in the studies of Ogden Lindsley. We will look at different types of behavior. We will learn the differences between innate vs learned behavior vs reflexes. We will studie non-associative learning, learn the definition of imprinting with the studies of Konrad Lorenz. We will learn WHY understanding behaviorism is important for us as dog trainers.
In this lecture will we study the research of Dr. Ivan Pavlov and the differences between an innate reflex, a unconditioned response and a conditioned response. We will look at the law of temporal contiguity and the effects classical conditioning has to our dogs in our daily lives. We will learn that Pavlov is in most cases the cause of our dog’s unwanted behaviors.
In this lecture we will study the findings of Dr. Thorndyke’s law of effect and instrumental learning theories. We will look at his law of readiness. We will study Thorndyke’s puzzle box. Take a look in to Dr. Skinner’s operant conditioning theories. We will learn why the 5 operant consequences are important to understand and how we can use these theories to influence our dog’s behavior.
We will take a deep dive in how Wolves live and debunk some of the myths that surrounds them. Like a wolf has one pack leader, that is one of the most outdated theories that exist around wolves. We will look at the studies of dr. Zimmer and Dr. Schenkel. We will study the findings of Dr. David Mech. We will look at “old school” training techniques and WHY they are not working. We will study the definition of “dominance”. We will study HOW to build trust, respect and fun between human and dog and set you and your dog up for succes.
We learn the basics of building engagement and learn to keep Dr. Pavlov as small as possible. We will to how setup your home for succes to encourage a calm and assertive mind state for the dog.
In this lecture we will review the knowledge of part 1 of this course and prepare to have a much deeper dive in the science of animal behavior.
We will study the differences between innate and learned behaviors. We will look at the different forms reflexes, different forms of Taxis and Kinesis, like negative thermotaxis or positive phototaxis and many more. We will study fixed action patterns, study circadian rhythms and take a deep dive in habituation.
We will build upon the knowledge gained in part 1 of this course and take a much deeper look in to the studies of Dr. Pavlov and Classical conditioning. We will study generalization, discrimination and extinction. Will study spontaneous recovery and the differences between unlearning. We will also learn that dogs can see color.
We will take a much deeper dive into operant conditioning and build upon the knowledge gained in part 1 of this course. We will study the reciprocal relationship of the consequences of operant conditioning in relationship to the behavior of our dogs. We will study shaping. Study definitions like "Target Behavior", "approximate behavior" and more.
In Dr. Skinner’s experiments he discovered though observation that there are four schedules of partial reinforcement. Each of these four schedules of partial reinforcement has a different effect on controlling and maintaining behavior. These four schedules are Fixed Ratio and Variable Ratio, Fixed Interval and Variable interval. In this lecture we will take a deep dive into the differences between all reinforcement schedules. We will also learn what schedule to use when training dogs.
I will be discussing two forms of aversive control, the first one is avoidance learning and the second escape learning. We will study the different forms of avoidance learning and learn more about the negative reinforcement side of operant conditioning.
we need to ask ourselves. can animals learn by modeling? The answers is a BIG YES! In this lecture we will take a deep dive into the studies of Dr. Bandura's observational learning theories and how these theories apply to animals and in specific our dogs. We will learn that children often have a big effect on our dog's behavior.
What is a stimulus or what are stimuli? In this lecture we will study the differences in internal and external stimuli. We will study that there is a salience order of stimuli and WHY dogs have a difficulty with "listening". I will explain what the cognitive process of motivational salience is. We will study overshadowing and the consequences it has on our dog training. We will study stimulus control, and stimulus blocking. We will look at the stimulus generalization gradient and more.
In this lecture we will study stress and how it affects learning. We will learn that the stress response includes several changes that have negative effects on the performance of animals. Some of these changes are physiological like changes in immune function, release of cortisol hormone, Release of Adrenaline, release of Aldosterone, release of testosterone, inhibition of oxytocin release and many behavioral changes. We will look at sleep and why its important for our dogs and much much more.
Dog training is both a science and a mechanical skill. In this lecture I will go over some of the foundational mechanical skills to improve your work and communication with your dog.
DID YOU KNOW THAT THERE IS ONE MISSING PIECE IN DOG TRAINING THAT CAN CHANGE EVERYTHING?
You may have experience training dogs and still encounter problems in your training. You may have visited or hired many other trainers and still facing the same problems. Or, if you’re new at dog training you most certainly will find yourself up against a few obstacles before you are able to fully train your dog. Or if you are just someone who is interested in the world of Animal Behavior you have come to the right place.
There are lots of courses out there, and a number of basic techniques to assumingely teach your dog “commands” and to follow your lead. Or courses that rely on tools like e-collars etc. But they don’t cover one of the most important things that can help you unlock a whole new perspective and a way to relate to your dog to get the most out of your relationship with your dog.
I’m Cynologist Bart de Gols, who has been working with canines for over 30 years. I developed my own highly-regarded relationship based training program to help humans create the best possible relationship with their dog. I also develop highly-skilled protection and working canines for Tactical K9 Solutions. My years of extensive experience have taught me that dog training isn’t just clicking with a clicker, presenting food or giving a correction or using tools like E-Collars and pinch collars. Dog training is a science, and we need to understand how dogs learn. Now, I’m ready to take my expertise and share the one thing that will make all the difference in your own dog training and your relationship with your dog!
SO…ARE YOU WONDERING JUST WHAT THAT ONE MISSING PIECE IN DOG TRAINING IS?
The answer is understanding animal behavior and the process of how dogs learn. It may sound simple enough, but it is the most overlooked aspect of training. To get the results you want, you can’t train an animal how you as a human want to train them, but you need to understand how they learn and communicate. It is crucial to meet the animal where they are versus where you want them to be.
In my ground-breaking Udemy Course, From Tyrant to Teacher, - Foundation of Animal Behavior, I am uncovering the secrets of science-based knowledge on how animals truly learn. This is the key to unlocking that final missing piece to help make dog training easy.
In From Tyrant to Teacher Foundation of Animal Behavior , you’ll learn:
