First we will look at Smokey without any tremolo so that we can learn the melody and how to navigate through it.
Here we'll look at adding tremolo to extend notes and replace all the crotchet/quarter note rests in the simple version.
This follow-up course is designed to help you grow your mandolin skills through four carefully chosen songs of varying difficulty. Each one is taught step-by-step, with a focus on melody, rhythm, and technique—so you’ll gradually build confidence and musical fluency as you go.
We begin with the gentle and familiar My Darling Clementine, then work up to longer, more challenging tunes, helping you progress at a steady pace.
You’ll also have access to MP3 jam tracks for each song, giving you the chance to practice playing along with guitar accompaniment—great for developing your musical ear and timing.
In this course, you’ll learn:
My Darling Clementine (a classic folk song)
I'll Fly Away (famously featured in O Brother, Where Art Thou?)
In the Sweet By and By (covered by artists like Dolly Parton and Johnny Cash)
On Top of Old Smokey (an old folk song)
This course is ideal if you've just completed my Mandolin for Beginners course, or if you’re already comfortable reading basic tablature.
By the end, you’ll have four songs under your belt and the confidence to play along with backing tracks—applying everything you’ve learned in a fun, musical way.
Please note: All songs selected comply with Udemy’s public domain policy.
