Course content

8 sections89 lectures7h 23m total length
  • Intro1:53

Practice a seven-group horn warm-up program: breathing, buzzing, mouthpiece work, airflow, sound flexibility, scales, stability and center, strength, lip trills, and double or triple tonguing.

  • Buzzing0:55

Buzzing is used sparingly to gauge how quickly the lips vibrate, moving from complete relaxation into lip tension and back to tailor the morning warm-up routine with deep breaths.

  • Breathing4:39

Use a device and ping pong ball to train a morning breath; adjust airflow with three holes, then adopt Steenstrup's open throat and wow and toe sounds through inhale–exhale patterns.

  • Mouthpiece2:16

Warm up lips and boost resonance with mouthpiece, using a buzzer as an aid. Start on a note, extend intervals, and open the throat for fourths to octaves.

  • Noodling2:30

Practice doodle exercises that pair two parameters, like slurred and tongued, slow and fast, within a fifth upwards. Start with trumpet flexi, slurred then tongued, and circle notes beyond fifth.

  • Air Flow3:29

Develop smooth airflow and a centered air column across low to high registers through progressive long F horns exercises, extending to B horns with natural and tongued tones.

  • Flexibility7:45

Explore flexibility in horn basics and daily warm-ups to enhance control, tone, and range through focused exercises and technique cues.

  • Sound4:30

Develop a homogeneous sound and precise intonation by practicing long tones with a tuner and metronome, maintaining a steady air column and inner pulse for controlled crescendos and decrescendos.

  • Scales7:48

Practice chromatic, major, and minor scales in all keys as a daily warm-up, using slurred, tongued, and staccato patterns, with arpeggios and low-register extensions.

  • Stability10:47

Build stable horn technique with centered tone, precise intonation, and flexible balance through breath-driven articulation, metronome-guided breath accents, and a progressive stability exercise sequence across two octaves.

  • Strength3:12

Build horn strength gradually through daily basics and stability exercises, then three drills: high-register scale down and up, half-step patterns, and chromatic circling on the highest note.

  • Double Tonguing2:29

Master double tonguing for orchestral repertoire by practicing on single notes and scales, maintain continuous airflow and forward tongue for clarity, and aim for faster single tonguing.

  • Lip Trills3:47

Master lip trills to shape and mordent trills, using breath control and lip tension to connect overtones; practice starting directly and extend trill length for breath supported execution with turbo.

  • Recommended Reading4:09

Explore horn warm-up texts and etudes from the Arnold Jacobs School, Freuds Rivera, and Michael Hölzle Technique School. Improve air control, embouchure, articulation, legato, and tone quality through these exercises.

Requirements

  • Basic knowledge of playing the horn is required.

Description

Dear horn players,

In these 33 short videos, I present my personal daily warm-up and technique program. It includes a comprehensive range of exercises I’ve developed over time to meet my individual needs. Many of them are inspired by my teachers, professors, masterclasses, and colleagues.

These exercises help me tackle the daily challenges of horn playing, stay in shape, and continue improving through regular practice. Over the years, I’ve built a flexible system that I can adapt based on my mood and available time. The structure is divided into seven sections, each focusing on a fundamental aspect of horn playing. Covering all seven each day allows me to be fully warmed up – whether for a rehearsal, concert, or another practice session – even when time is limited.

Each section includes a wide variety of exercises that I can select and vary as needed. I usually avoid starting with extremes in range or dynamics. Just like in sports, the muscles need to warm up gently. Only after that do I expand the range downward and especially upward, and move into more intense dynamics.

A core principle of my routine is to combine contrasting elements within a single exercise – such as slow and fast, tongued and slurred, forte and piano – in direct succession. This helps the lips and airflow adjust smoothly to different demands.

Beyond the basics, this program also includes advanced techniques – designed to push your playing further and refine specific skills.

This collection is a starting point: I plan to expand it over time and add further materials, exercises, and insights that continue to support and challenge your development as a horn player.

Please note: The original version of this course was recorded in German with English subtitles. To improve accessibility and understanding for international audiences, it has been fully dubbed into English using AI-based voice technology. Minor visual artifacts or graphical inconsistencies may appear due to the automated processing. I kindly ask for your understanding in this context – the clarity of content and improved accessibility were the primary goals.

I hope these materials will enrich your own practice and offer fresh perspectives on your daily work with the horn.
