Dear horn players,
In these 33 short videos, I present my personal daily warm-up and technique program. It includes a comprehensive range of exercises I’ve developed over time to meet my individual needs. Many of them are inspired by my teachers, professors, masterclasses, and colleagues.
These exercises help me tackle the daily challenges of horn playing, stay in shape, and continue improving through regular practice. Over the years, I’ve built a flexible system that I can adapt based on my mood and available time. The structure is divided into seven sections, each focusing on a fundamental aspect of horn playing. Covering all seven each day allows me to be fully warmed up – whether for a rehearsal, concert, or another practice session – even when time is limited.
Each section includes a wide variety of exercises that I can select and vary as needed. I usually avoid starting with extremes in range or dynamics. Just like in sports, the muscles need to warm up gently. Only after that do I expand the range downward and especially upward, and move into more intense dynamics.
A core principle of my routine is to combine contrasting elements within a single exercise – such as slow and fast, tongued and slurred, forte and piano – in direct succession. This helps the lips and airflow adjust smoothly to different demands.
Beyond the basics, this program also includes advanced techniques – designed to push your playing further and refine specific skills.
This collection is a starting point: I plan to expand it over time and add further materials, exercises, and insights that continue to support and challenge your development as a horn player.
