n this short welcome video, you’ll meet Shiatsu Shane — your guide for this hands-on mini master class focused entirely on relieving tension in the quads.
You’ll learn why the quadriceps are one of the most important (and most overlooked) areas of the body when it comes to hip tightness, lower back pain, and knee discomfort. Shane will walk you through what to expect from each of the 4 upcoming lessons, what equipment you’ll need (nothing fancy!), and how to get the most from this free training.
Whether you’re a total beginner or an experienced therapist, this intro will set you up for success and help you feel confident and ready to dive in.
Let’s begin!
Welcome to this hands-on quad release lesson — a must-know technique for any therapist working with clients experiencing lower back, hip, or knee pain. In this session, we focus on warming and softening the quadriceps using gentle palming techniques that also connect with the stomach and spleen meridians. You’ll learn how to assess the knees for bolstering, how to work with the fascia to allow better movement and fluidity, and how to align your touch with the earth element — open, grounded, and intentional. You’ll Learn: Why quads are often over-dominant and linked to back/knee issues How to use palming to gently warm fascia and prepare the tissue An introduction to the stomach and spleen meridians (earth element) Proper client positioning, including bolster use under the knees How to sequence your contact: midline → stomach meridian → spleen meridian How to sink your body weight to connect deeply with fascia and energy flow
In this final quad lesson, we explore a range of active and passive stretching techniques to take your treatment deeper—helping to mobilize the hip, release the hip flexors, and relieve common causes of knee and lower back pain. You’ll also learn how to work around the attachments at the knee and into the often-overlooked TFL (Tensor Fasciae Latae) using strategic positioning and deep static holds. This lesson blends functional movement with massage, giving you powerful tools to improve mobility and reduce muscular restrictions in your clients. You’ll Learn: How to safely bend and position the leg for quad access and hip mobility Lean-back gliding techniques to stretch and massage the quad simultaneously “Deboning” methods to separate the quad from surrounding tissue (gentle but powerful) When and how to use active pin-and-stretch vs passive therapist-assisted movement How to release quad tension at the knee using overlapping thumbs Mobilising the hip and opening the lower back through foot placement and controlled glide How to locate and release the TFL muscle to address hip and lower back discomfort The difference in technique for clothed vs oiled skin (great for joggers, shorts, or direct contact)
In this quick 2-minute closer, we end the quad series with a simple but powerful stretch that can be done with or without oil. You'll learn how to stretch the front of the thigh using three directional holds — straight to the glute, across to the opposite side, and outwards to open the hips. This stretch is perfect to wrap up your treatment, relieve tension, and check for sacral movement that might indicate deeper restrictions. A gentle yet effective way to leave your client feeling open and aligned.
