Flipping the What?
We’ve all had the experience of being in the zone before. It’s when you do your best work, but it feels effortless. You lose track of time, and even though the task is challenging, you don’t feel fatigued. In fact, you feel like you could keep working all night. We typically enter the zone or the flow accidentally. But what if we want to “manufacture” flow? Is it possible to flip a switch at will to induce the state?
Actually, yes. There are positive ways to improve the chances you will get into your zone when you have the right conditions and put the right triggers for you. Since we operate differently, you will need to spend a little time figuring out exactly what works for you, but trust us…it will be totally worth it! There’s nothing quite like working in a state of flow! In the emails to come, you’ll find out how to flip the switch, so you are working smarter, faster, and more joyfully whenever you choose!
Let's begin the lesson...
Mastery is Master!
Perhaps the first thing you need to understand about flipping the switch to get into the zone is that it takes some mastery. That is mastery over the task you will be undertaking. For example, if you are a brand-new knitter, it's unlikely you will get into flow knitting on your first ever project. Flow happens when our brains can, to some extent, relax into the task.
That doesn't mean the task we undertake should be easy. It's been scientifically proven that we get into a flow state easier when a task is challenging, not something we've never done before. Your mind needs to be engaged but feel confident that you can succeed at the job, even if it's a little tricky.
When you are discovering how to flip the switch into the flow, start with hobbies or tasks you feel you have a mastery level. Otherwise, you're only going to frustrate yourself. Let's begin the study.
Flip the switch to enter the zone, block out disturbances, lose track of time, and focus on the task with single-mindedness, persistence, and high productivity, free of excuses.
Discover that anyone can flip the switch by facing the unknown with curiosity and bravery, practice entering the zone, and embrace personalized methods that take time.
But First, Coffee
Studies have found that strategically consuming caffeine helps you flip the switch to get into your zone. Note the word "strategically" above! Drinking 2 cups of coffee has been shown to help you focus with more intensity, work longer without giving up, and improve short-term memory. In other words, it makes getting into the zone more comfortable.
However, the effect stops and even reverses once you drink 4 cups of coffee or the equivalent caffeine intake. Concentration is lost, and it's easier to get distracted and frustrated. So, go ahead and have a couple of cups before you are ready to enter the zone, but then switch to water so that you stay hydrated...which your brain needs to sustain the flip.
Now that I've got those creative juices flowing, how do I "Flip the Switch?"
Flip the switch by deciding on the right tasks, balancing between challenging and attainable, and finding your zone to stay engaged without getting bored.
Identify your optimal work environment, circadian rhythm, and collaboration style to flip the switch on focus, then tailor time management to minimize distractions.
The Internal
Your internal triggers designed to flip the switch and put you into the zone are made up of three distinct parts. First, you’re going to need to concentrate your attention on what you’re doing.
Second, a clear goal puts a focus on that attention. Add to this feedback coming hard on the heels of the action, and you’ve got what you need to create this state. It’s critically important that you’re not only feeling challenged to find the situation amusing, but it’s coupled with the skills to get the job done.
These pieces designed entirely by you. This means self-talk is crucial, and you need to have a reliable, stick-to-it attitude pushing you to get things done.
Use upbeat, fast music to stay alert and focused on tasks, as loud music can trick your mind and make work more enjoyable.
Be mindful of foods that affect energy by choosing light lunches, healthy snacks, or five to eight small meals throughout the day. Drink water, limit sugars, preservatives, and fried foods.
I have a question for you. What happens if self stops talking to yourself? Seriously! In the previous chapter, we discussed looking "inward" to find the answers, but what happens when you get to the repeats. You know the same ideas you had before! Or worse dead silence. Zip nothing! Well, it's time to flip!
Flip to what? Look outward! Stop looking in the mirror for solutions, we are finite look toward the infinite, the eternal! This section will help you look beyond yourself toward the outward to something that is wonderfully made! So let's begin...
