Find Your Purpose; Transform Your Career

I believe that purpose is something we were born with, so it makes sense for us to start our research there. In childhood, most of us were more transparent than we are as adults. How did you spend your time? What were you like as a student? What did you constantly seek? These are just some of the questions you can ask in researching your childhood for your Elements of Purpose.

Rosey is a client who shares how her leadership roles as a kid led her to understand some Elements of her Purpose.

This characteristic can be so telling, yet so difficult to see: What comes so naturally to you that you don't even realize it's something special? Often, our most innate characteristics hide themselves to us simply because we're not conscious of using them. What do you do non-stop, without consciously turning it off or on?

Mike became known by others in his field for a certain type of respectful treatment. It took the notice of others before he realized that something he was doing was special. What have others noticed about you that you aren't even conscious of?

Characteristic #3 speaks to a self-help concept that most people have to force themselves to do — be in the moment. "Purpose activities" cause you to naturally focus on the moment, because you're so engaged in what you're doing. When do you notice that you're super engaged in the moment?

Susan tells us of an opportunity that caused her to overcome her nerves because she was so motivated by her topic and audience. This is a great example of being in the moment — it allows you to let go of other concerns. When does that happen for you?

How often are you conscious of a situation involving another person in which one of you is losing? Too many times we allow ourselves to either give too much or take too much. Purpose demands equal gain for all parties involved. This happens naturally when you're working in your purpose. When do you notice that all parties involved are winning... including you?

How do you bring win-win moments into your boring moments? You first discover what your win-win moments are! Emily tells us how she's noticed how important her energy is to herself and others, and how she uses her energy to enlighten the rest of her day.

Energy is an easy study when researching what your purpose is. If you pay attention, you'll notice some activities increase your energy while others drain it. If you don't like your job, it is highly likely that the vast majority of your activities drain your energy. This is why we need to get you out of that job! We need to get you into a situation where your energy is first maintained and then, even better, increased!

Cole tells us of a contrast between two activities in his day — one that produces energy and time flies by, while another slows him down and time drags. This is a contrast you too can look for to help discover Elements of your Purpose in the activities that cause time to fly!

How often are you asked to do something that you don't enjoy? This characteristic is all about what you're good at and enjoy. This intersection of skill and desire points to Elements of your Purpose.

Jean tells us how she's found a way to build a business around something she both loves to do and is good at doing. What in your life is like that for you? Can you build your work around it? If you're good at it and enjoy doing it, there's a good chance you can make money at it.

There are certain things we just don't want to do. But every once in a while, an opportunity motivates us so much that we're willing to step outside of our comfort zone to do it. What is like that for you? First of all, what do you typically avoid, and second of all, when have you done it despite your resistance? Whatever that thing is, it contains Elements of your Purpose!

Anthony talks about how his training did not prepare him for his passion; yet, he has found a way to create a business around it instead of trying to find passion in his training.

Unfortunately, this happens to all of us. The beautiful thing is that Purpose allows us reprieve! Have you ever noticed that certain activities cause your fatigue, sickness, or despair to magically disappear? Or at the very least, you have no problem carrying on despite them? Whenever you discover an activity that either reduces or eliminates these negative feelings, you will find Elements of your Purpose within!

Brian tells us about a really long day that didn't seem so bad simply because it involved a lot of his Elements of Purpose. What activities are you so excited about doing that it doesn't matter if your sick or tired or in a bad mood? This is how powerful your purpose is.
