- You accumulate credits every hour for using a burst-able instance below a certain % of CPU utilization, and these credits will be used to burst your instance when using something CPU intensive.
- Don't run your credits to 0, or your CPU performance will be capped.
- T2 Small, Medium, and Large all are set to run at a certain % of processor power, if they have to go above that level they burn your credits.
- T2 Micro and Nano are too small to be a useful FileMaker Server in most situations, so FileMaker starts at the T2 Small.
- You have a maximum amount of credits you can earn, and the bigger your server is, the more credits you can earn and the more credits you will earn per hour.
- The T2 Medium and Large have 2 processors that can both go to 100%, for a relative combined power of actually 200%

- The goal of this video is to establish what a typical FileMaker user will do over the course of 2-3 minutes.
- This standard usage scenario will vary for everyone.
- Once you have established a standard usage scenario, you can write a script to simulate this usage and use this to test the performance strain on the server.
- With FileMaker Cloud you can tune the power of the server so we can decide if we should dial up/ dial down server specs.
- Two different scripts: optimized and non-optimized versions.
- Poorly designed databases with poor script execution will require your to pay more per month.
- Very Large Sample File:

- This video will run through several tests of a T2.small instance on AWS. This will help demonstrate the possible loads a server can handle.
- There are 2 test scripts: Optomized Usage Scenario and Unoptomized Usage Scenario.
- AWS Admin Console gives you some monitoring tools to help you gauge the performance of the server. You can use it to view how many credits you are burning.
- Too many people hitting the server really hard with complex requests will cause the server to perform slowly and burn up credits.
- It's important to consider how many down hours your business has. You are burning credits when your business is up and running and regenerating credits when your business is down. Are you burning more credits than you are regenerating? Will you ever exhaust your pool of credits?
- With a T2.small you will regenerate credits at 12 credits/hour.
- From the results of this test, you could probably support 2 WebDirect users, and 3 Pro users under a light load.
- Very Large Sample File:
http://rcclink.com/dl_proc.php?idc=CPN_00015
- In general FileMaker Inc. does not recommend WebDirect Users access solutions that are hosted on a T2.small server.
- A T2.small with 5 users can be maxed out if they are all active. Performance losses will be noticeable.
- The Admin Console will generate notifications that your server CPU is maxed out. It will not notify you about spent credits.
- WebDirect places a lot of load on the server because the server allocates more memory to its session than any other client.
- Live streamed our cloud server file with a large amount of users on it at once to test the strain on FileMaker Cloud.
- See how many people accessed the same file at the same time before it started to struggle.
- If you are having trouble with your Cloud file you should see if there are any ways to help optimize the app.
- Cloud 2 is the natural evolution from the Cloud 1 release.
- Which tool do you use?
- FMS is the Mac or Windows server software. Claris calls this "On Prem" or "On Premis".
- Cloud 2 requires NO technical expertise to setup.
- Cloud 2 is a bundle of the FileMaker Licenses PLUS the needed hardware... into a single purchase.
- Limitations of Cloud 1... and addresses these limitations in Cloud 2.
- Cloud 2 has a higher cost, because it is bundled with hardware, and a SSL certifficate.
- Cloud 2 is "Software as a Service" (Saas).
- End users cannot tell which server their custom app "lives on".
- FMS requires some sort of technical expertise to install and setup.
- FMS can be installed on an Amazon Virtual Windows Server...so it can live in the Cloud.
- Cloud 2 has a higher cost, because it is bundled with hardware, and a SSL certificate.
- Cloud 2 requires NO technical expertise to setup.
- 80% of FileMaker users can use Cloud 2 ... and it will meet all their needs.
- FMS allow for precise selection of hardware by your IT Team.
- FMS backups are manually configured by your IT staff.
- Cloud 2 backups databases every 20 minutes, and saves those automatically for 30 days.
- Cloud 2 only supports FMID... and not MS Active Directory.
- FMS supports MS Active Directory.
- Cloud 2 supports DAPI and OData.
- FMS supports DAPI, PHP Gateway, and XML Gateway.
- Cloud 2 doesn't fully support ODBC.
- Cloud 2 does NOT support server side plugins.

- In this video, we show you how to add FileMaker ID authentication to a FileMaker solution.
- This process is required for all solutions hosted on Cloud 2.
- Overview of the user interface used to add FileMaker ID accounts or groups to a file.
- How FileMaker handles accounts assigned to multiple groups - priority ordering.
- FileMaker Cloud requires all Full Access accounts to have passwords.
- The importance of maintaining two user account lists.
- This is a very important video if you’re planning on using Cloud 2 or you plan on using Encryption At Rest.
- FileMaker encrypts files automatically on upload to Cloud 2.
- FileMaker Cloud 2 assigns a randomly generated password to the file.
- You will need to get the password from the Administrative Console.
- You need to keep it safe, somewhere outside of the Administrative Console in case the password is ever lost.
- If you lose the password you will never be able to access the file again.
- In this video, we go over the process of restoring your FileMaker solutions from backups in the Cloud 2 Administrative Console.
- Cloud 2 automatically backs up hosted solutions every 20 minutes so you can restore a solution with minimal losses.
- The restored file will be brought into active databases as a new file, it will not replace the old file.
- You can download the old file and remove it from the active databases, it’s important to rename the restored file to match the name of the old file.
- Make sure to have the EAR password handy in case FileMaker asks you for it when you open the restored file.
- Small businesses like to find ways to save money. Cheaping out, and not using FileMaker Server is a bad idea, and you will pay dearly for it later. You have been warned.
- FileMaker Server provides mission critical capabilities to protect your database and your business.
- It also provides a backup scheduling feature, which is crucial if your file crashes.
- If your file crashes, you should always roll back to your previous good backup.
- FileMaker Pro can share an open file locally with up to 5 other users, or Peer-to-Peer (P2P) Sharing. This should only be used temporarily or to test a database.
- FileMaker Pro does NOT have the same level of protection as FileMaker Server or automatic backups.
- This also affects performance for the connected user and the user hosting the file.
- If the host lets their machine go to sleep or they quit FileMaker, etc., everyone will get booted from the database.
- Server also allows many more concurrent users than a locally shared file.
- We STRONGLY suggest purchasing FileMaker Server and either purchasing your own dedicated machine to act as a server, or seek the services of a hosting company.
- FileMaker Cloud now has an improved browser interface.
- In previous versions of FM there was 2 interfaces, the browser interface, and the command line.
- Since FM 17 release there is a 3rd interface. The Server Admin API.
- Some critical functions in the browser interface were moved over to the command line interface, which is harder to use.
- Each interface has a portion of functionality control, but not all of it which means that you must learn 3 interfaces to change all settings.
- Requirements can vary between minor variations so always check those.
- CPU and Memory usually scale together and depend on the number of users, solution file size, and other 3rd party software or plugins.
- RCC recommends using a SSD in your server. Spinning hard disks are too slow to get good performance.
- Make sure any major OS updates are already installed on the server before you install FMS.
- Configure your firewall with a new rule: Make sure to open TCP local ports 80, 442, 5003, 16000.
- When installing FMS it comes with its own version of Java to install. Do not update Java with the Oracle updater as it runs the risk of breaking your server.
- Also consider saving your backups to an offsite location. Saving to a DropBox synced folder makes this easy.
- Why are we training on FM Server? It's essential for multi-user, and to know what to do when something goes wrong.
- In this video, we will show you some of the ins and outs of the FileMaker Server Admin Console and how it's changed over the years.
- NEVER use a crashed FileMaker database. ALWAYS restore from the last good backup.
- Discussion of security and backups.
- This has really changed in the FMS 18 Release.
- Logs are no longer viewable in the Administrative Console.
- Access Log records users logging on and off the file, as well as PSOS scripts being run.
- Event log records server startup and shutdown, server settings, backups being run, etc.
- Web Publishing engine log records web publishing engine information.
- Log files on a Mac server are located in /Library/FileMaker Server/Logs/
- Log files on a Windows server are in C:/Program Files/FileMaker Server/Logs/
- You can find the log files in the Logs directory, where FileMaker Server is installed on the server machine.
- LogTail, for Mac, is a useful tool for inspecting your logs.
- 3 Types of Backups: Bootable, Scheduled, and Offsite. You need them all.
- (MAC Users) Sync2Folders is the old shareware version. They now have a updated professional app called "Sync Folders Pro" on the Apple App Store for $7.99 which works pretty well. This App will not Zip the files during Sync.
- (MAC Users) "Get Back 2" is a similar App, but compresses the backup during the transfer. Very clever.
- How many backups should you have, Onsite or off?
- What is a cloned drive and what value does it offer?
- Hard Linking - Introduced in FM 12, is FM's way of saving space with backups. During a backup, FM will take a backup from them current backup and the previous backup and compare them, if they are the same, then it will create a file that is actually a link to the previous backup. So there is no duplication of data.
- Hard Links look and act like separate files but they are not. They will report the same amount of space taken as the referenced backup but they are actually much smaller.
- Interesting note: If there are many hard link backup files on the server and you add all of them up, they can actually sum to more space than what the size of the hard drive is! This is because of how hard linking works.
- This is why it's important when retrieving a backup file to always make a copy of the folder and then mess with the copy.
- These backups are highly automated and result in FileMaker only saving "changes" to databases during a backup and not entire copies of a database. So if a 4 gig database has 20K of new data, progressive backups will only write 20K of data instead of the whole 4 gigs, so its super fast!!!
- CLI = Command Line Interface. This can be used to change settings on the server.
- Database Cache Size (RAM Memory) - the size of memory that is set aside for a database. Setting this size too small will lead to poor performance.
- You can also specify the max number of hosted files, max number of user connections, max number of PSOS script sessions.
- Enable/Disable Logs, Enable/Disable PHP and XML APIs. The ability to change the settings for these features is being moved from the web interface, only to the CLI.
- The fms admin commands Get, and Set, are our only window into changing the settings for Logging and PHP and XML functionality.
- Be aware that there is no undo functionality in the CLI. The server will execute whatever command you give it.
- Login to the FMS admin console.
- The SSL CSR(Certificate Sign-in Request) has been moved in to the CLI and out of the web interface.
- Always create strong key file passwords, when creating the CSR.
- Be sure to confirm you have correctly typed all the parameters for the CSR, because re-keying a certificate is a pain.
- Not the same as the "FileMaker Data API"
- Page Level locking or PLL has to do with locking down part of a record in your database. This can improve performance of your database if done properly.
- Startup Restoration is a new feature FileMaker has created that will try to restore a file that has crashed. The File could be damaged or corrupted from a crash to this feature will try to restore the file to a state that is good. This feature shouldn’t replace backing up your system and we would recommend you still backup your file often.
- These features have great potential but it is still in the early development so you might run into some issues with these feature. We would recommend disabling these features for the time being, especially if your file is used to run your business.
- In our case we will be using Postman to change the setting of the Startup Restoration.
- First you will have to obtain a token from the server to help process the requests you have. Getting the token will allow you to temporarily send requests because the token verifies who you are. Next, we will put in our web admin console login info into Postman so we can get the token. Once you send out the request it will return the token.
- We will use the token we just got to process a patch request to update the Startup Restoration option. Once you have the information set you can send the request to turn the setting off or on.
- For the setting change to be recognized you must restart your server. After the server is restarted, the setting should be changed and you can check to see using the Get request we have in the video.
- Always restore from the last good backup. DO NOT use crashed databases.
- If you're using FileMaker Cloud, your procedure is different.
- There is a specific procedure for restoring from a crash on FileMaker Server.
- You may want to create your own variation of this procedure for your organization, but keep your eye on the fundamentals.
- Discussion includes conversation about "HardLinks"
- FMS has a default preference of ALWAYS trying to open the local files automatically whenever it boots up. TURN this OFF.
- When the database Server crashes, take the crashed files out, date them, and compress them. Do NOT delete them.
- After the Restart of the server Find the last good backup, and make a COPY into the Data/Database folder.
- Crashes CAN occur in the middle of a backup. DO NOT use these.
- Restoring the files on a Mac requires a reset of the correct Permissions to the FileMaker Files,BEFORE you start them up on the FileMaker Server.
- If you fire up files and you find that you cannot EDIT the data and the Files are set to "Read-Only" the permissions are WRONG.
- To fix FMP12 files that have the wrong permissions, CLOSE the files FIRST, then Fix them, then Reopen them in FileMaker Server.

- In the FM 17 release there was a new Admin REST API. This new custom tool utilizes the new REST API to bring the functionality of all the different admin interfaces together in one place.
- This tool also gives you a ton of useful graphical status indicators to help you manage many files or many servers at once.
- This tool is also completely unlocked and open, so you can make your own additions/customizations.
- The coolest part is that this tool is completely free and completely unlocked, and available at thebrainbasket.com.
- This tools is configured to help manage a FM Server software, but it can be configured to manage FM Cloud.
- If you value your data you should host your FileMaker Solution on a FM Server or FM Cloud with a regular back up schedule.
- There are various reasons for machine or drive failures, but you want to be certain your data is safe.
- Offsite backups will most likely happen over the internet which can be slow and eat up bandwidth.
- It's important to profile the backup process and identify when the appropriate time to push a file over the internet.
- You can tell your server to backup to a DropBox synced folder. Which covers offsite backups.
- AWS S3 tool is an industrial strength tool, which is harder to use, but can back up larger files. It charges by the Gigabyte.
- This topic was introduced in 1202 - Accounts and Privileges. Also, mention in 0217 - Automated Maintenance.
- Enabling idle timeout requires changing user privilege sets in each file to enable idle disconnect.
- Because you cannot edit the default privilege sets, you must clone them to make the change.
- To set the idle timeout number of minutes, you must set it in the FileMaker Server or Cloud Admin Console.
- Set FileMaker Pro/Go clients to time out after 120 or 180 minutes to ensure nightly maintenance takes place.
- Server Assisted Script Execution is very powerful.
- The function is very similar to PSOS with one major difference.
- You need to set this up on the Server side in advance.
- Deploying the FileMaker Platform requires a high performance database, with lean design, while ALSO leveraging multiple replicating servers.
- Claris Corp won’t teach you how to do this, but we did, in a 5-day LiveStream event.
- This summary video provides a high level overview of our implementation and deployment.
