A GB coach leads a complete field hockey course, outlining core skills: dribbling, passing, receiving, defending, shooting and gameplay, drawn from high-level playing and coaching experience.
Learn essential field hockey dribbling skills to advance the ball, beat defenders, and maintain ball out in front with solid stick contact for control and vision.
Master the v drag to change direction. Deceive the defender by keeping your body facing the intended direction while dragging the ball off your right foot in a wide v.
Master the push pass for controlled, longer passes, keeping the ball connected to the stick with a wide base. Drills include push pass tennis and kabaddi hockey.
Practice receiving bouncing and aerial balls in pairs by trapping below knee height and using a wide base with a horizontal stick to cushion and control.
Master the block tackle to win the ball by keeping weight over the left knee and the stick, two hands on the stick wide apart, timing to avoid fouls.
Master the forehand finish by adopting a wide, low base and two-handed grip, with the left shoulder pointed at the goal to direct the ball in and create space.
Master rebounding in field hockey by anticipating the ball, maintaining a ready wide base with hands apart, head over the ball, boxing out the defender, and shooting first time.
Master rebounding from shots saved by the keeper by using a split grip, a wide base, and a forward-leaning contact to score the rebound.
Master the back space shot to score in the circle by receiving the ball inside your body, loading weight, and putting the ball into the back space for a shot.
In this course, Great Britain scout and coach, Jamie Kingstone will take you step by step through the key components of hockey.
Jamie has worked with the Great Britain Hockey team across all age groups giving him a deep understanding of how to develop the skills and tactics required to play hockey at the highest standard. He now runs his own training Hockey Academy, JK Hockey in the UK, working alongside a host of International and Olympic Hockey players.
The course will begin by introducing the basic dribbling, and passing and receiving skills that underpin hockey, before learning to apply these skills to develop a strong attack as an individual and as a team.
We'll also look at defensive tackling skill and how to guard against attacking players, using individual skills to retrieve the ball, and working as a team pressure the attacking into making difficult passes.
The course ends by looking at how to score from a wide range of positions and scenarios around the D and apply the skills learned throughout the course to develop effective game strategies and tactics.
We've added in some of Jamie's lesson plans for you to learn some of the drills and progressions he uses to teach some of the skills throughout the course, and we'll provide you with some teaching resources to support your players and students to improve their understanding.
By the end of the course, you should understand teach hockey to players at any stage of their development.
See you on the pitch!
