Description
Mental health is a vital component of our overall health, encompassing emotional, psychological, and social well-being. This course provides a deep understanding of what mental health means and how it closely ties to the broader concept of well-being. We begin by exploring the definitions of both mental health and well-being, emphasizing how they are interdependent—good mental health enhances well-being, and overall well-being supports mental stability.
Throughout the course, we will examine various factors that influence an individual’s mental health and well-being, including genetics, biology, personality, and individual life experiences. While genetics and biology play foundational roles, they are just parts of a much broader picture. Physical surroundings, such as pollution, noise, and housing conditions, also have a significant impact. The social environment, including relationships, community support, and workplace conditions, can either strengthen or weaken a person’s mental resilience.
We will discuss traumatic events and life stressors—like job loss, bereavement, or financial pressure—and how these events can lead to emotional and psychological distress. The course also explores the negative effects of substance use, and how stigma and discrimination can further harm mental well-being by isolating individuals or preventing them from seeking help.
Finally, learners will understand how factors like socioeconomic status, access to resources, and social support systems greatly influence one's ability to maintain mental wellness. By the end of this course, students will have a holistic understanding of mental health, the challenges people face, and strategies to improve resilience and overall quality of life.
