  • Self-production and sustainability4:45

Choosing ecologically sustainable suppliers and raw materials combined with the environmental value of self-production.

n this section, we’ll explore the core principles of self-sufficiency and sustainability, which are crucial to understanding extreme herbalism.

First, let’s talk about sustainability. A great reference is the book by Maurizio Pallante, The Monasteries of the Third Millennium. Here are two insightful quotes to set the stage:

    • “In today's industrial societies, no one produces anything they need to live, and everyone depends on the market for every need."

    • “The relentless growth in commodity production, enabled by technological innovation, has led to a confusion between well-being and having a lot of money.”

Now, what exactly are the monasteries of the third millennium? These will be small, decentralized communities immersed in nature and committed to biodiversity. They will drive a circular economy, based on exchanging, gifting, and redistributing surpluses—a return to sustainable living.

The work in these communities will focus on "cultured manual labor," a form of craftsmanship enriched by holistic knowledge. This approach ensures an understanding of the entire life cycle of materials, from extraction to reuse, ultimately eliminating waste.

By embracing these ideas, we can reimagine a more sustainable future rooted in both tradition and innovation.

How the Idea of Extreme Herbalism Originated

In this section, we’ll explore the origins and philosophy behind Extreme Herbalism:

    1. What is Extreme Herbalism in Your Opinion?

      • A reflection on how each person interprets the concept of extreme herbalism, based on their experiences and knowledge of herbs.

    2. What is Extreme Herbalism from a Practical Point of View?

      • A look at how extreme herbalism differs from modern practices, emphasizing a return to the roots of herbal medicine with more potent, hands-on methods.

    3. The Evolution of Modern Herbalism

      • Discussion on how modern herbalism has moved away from its historical and foundational characteristics, often resembling a perfumery, boutique, or para-pharmacy.

      • The focus on bringing the spotlight back to the real protagonists of herbalism: herbs, medicinal plants, and spices.

    4. Don’t Be Scared by the Word ‘Extreme’

      • An explanation of how the term "extreme" reflects the challenges of our times: extreme heat, rain, cyclones, pollution, viruses, and poverty.

      • Emphasizing the Italian saying: “Extreme evils are fought with extreme remedies!” or “Critical situations call for drastic measures,” highlighting the need for powerful, natural solutions.

  • Extreme herbalism: the book2:32
