Getting to know me and what to expect from this course.
What is the the purpose of comb?
What is bee space and how does it affect the colony?
Comb is comb, right? no!
Your comb contains a wealth of information about the health of your hive
How do you determine the quality of your queen?
A look a a frame from a failing queen. This queen was removed to make room for a new producing queen.
Diseases and pests are part of caring for your apiary. The hive is a living organism that can get disease and pests. This section covers a brief introduction to some of the more common types. How diseases present and are remedied are topics covered.
A briefing on varroa destructor and wax moth.
A summary of Section 6
Graphic image warning!
This shows small hive beetle damage (a bloom) in a small nuc hive.
This is an example of wax moth damage. Frames are eaten and webbed.
The wax moth did not overwhelm this hive. It was too small or dwindling. The moth is like the mushrooms of the forest, they clean up!
* do not let the wax math larvae get in your car or any where else, they eat everything!!
What does 'strength" mean when it comes to bee population? In this module we will learn ways of determining strengths of the hive.
Honey production is a key factor in evaluating the hive. Timing and knowing how the hive reacts will help the beekeeper stay ahead of a honey crop.
This is how we harvest honey. We do not always have capped honey but it is honey!

Do you love your hive? Of course you do!
But your hive is more than just honey. The world of beekeeping has changed since the days of our grandparents. Pests and diseases have made it important that you, the beekeeper, must take action.
Beekeeping is a participation hobby. To ensure a healthy hive and gather a bit of the sweet stuff a beekeeper needs to examine the comb. It can tell you all you need to know about your hive.
Don't let fear or analysis paralysis get the better of you and your hive. Let me help you understand what it is your are looking for in your hive.
We will cover:
Why you need to inspect your hives.
What to expect from healthy comb.
What some diseases look like.
Possible pest problems
Queens
And More...
I like not wearing my bee suit, forgetting myself and getting as close to the bees lives as they will let me, remembering in the process that there is more to life than the merely human and accepting the humbling truth that bees know better than I do.
This course will be sprinkled with bits of zen wisdom that you can help you on your journey of mindful beekeeping. Since I am an organic beekeeper I lean towards treatment free, holistic and natural management.
