Description

This is more of a broad guide where I cover critical listening, singing the melody, playing the melody on drums, defining a comping language, soloing, and more.

It's for the aspiring jazz drummer who is looking for more clarity and purpose in their playing and you should have quite a bit of experience before starting, but intermediate players can find value in the content as well.

We will be using Lazy Bird - John Coltrane as an example throughout this course.

Practice every exercise and etude bar by bar which means to play one bar and the downbeat of the next bar, pause for one measure, and then play it again until you can play it 3x perfectly. Then, move on to the following bar until you've gotten through the entire piece. After that, stitch two bars together because new problems and difficulties will arise when transitioning from one bar to the next. Continue with 4 bars, 8 bars, 16 bars, and 32 bars until you've completed the piece.

Also, every exercise ought to be played both under tempo and above tempo in order to gain a thorough mastery over the material. You never know how fast a band might play a piece so it's a good practice to stay flexible.

Who this course is for:

  • Aspiring jazz drummers who are looking for more purpose in their playing
