Description

This course explores the importance of play as a foundational childhood occupation and its role in supporting development across cognitive, physical, sensory, social, and emotional domains. Learners will examine how children use play to build skills, explore their environment, communicate with others, and participate in meaningful daily experiences. Grounded in occupational therapy principles, this course emphasizes the value of inclusive, play-based opportunities for children of all abilities.

Participants will learn how environmental factors, caregiver perspectives, activity design, and access to resources can influence a child’s ability to participate in play. The course highlights practical strategies for creating low-prep, developmentally appropriate activities that support engagement, independence, and skill development. Learners will explore how to analyze activities, adapt materials, grade task demands, and modify environments to increase accessibility in community-based settings.

Special attention is given to real-world application in places such as children’s museums, classrooms, childcare programs, and community play spaces. Through applied examples, learners will see how play can be used intentionally to support fine motor skills, sensory processing, problem solving, social participation, early learning, and self-regulation.

The course also emphasizes the importance of caregiver and staff education in promoting meaningful play experiences beyond structured programming. By the end of the course, learners will better understand how to use play as a powerful tool for development, advocate for inclusive environments, and create flexible programming that supports participation for children with diverse needs, interests, and abilities.
