Draw & Paint Islamic Patterns: Eightfold Islamic Geometry
What you'll learn
- Construct four different eightfold Islamic geometric patterns
- Trace, transfer and tile the pattern to create a larger composition.
- Create an interwoven effect.
- Add colour and create different finishes using watercolour pencils and paints.
- Create a subtle 3D effect by outlining in paint or metallic pen.
Requirements
- You will need a hard pencil, a soft pencil, paper, straight edge (i.e. ruler), compass, colouring pencils & pens to construct and outline the patterns. The hard pencil (2H or harder) for construction, the soft pencils (HB/B/2B) for outlining and tracing. To transfer the pattern you will need tracing paper, masking tape, spoon and watercolour paper. To colour the pattern, watercolour pencils or paints, paint brushes or aquabrush, tissue, pot of water, palette, pipette. To outline the pattern you will need a fineliner (waterproof) or metallic pen.
- You should have previous experience in drawing with a pencil, ruler and compass.
Description
In each of the four Sections you will learn to construct a different Islamic Geometric Pattern using a compass and ruler.
Section 2: An Itimud Ud Daula Pattern - The Mausoleum Walls
Section 3: A Bou Inania Pattern - The Wooden Jaali
Section 4: An Alhambra Pattern - The Static Geometric Rosette Variation
Section 5: A Moroccan Pattern - The Classic Zellige
These patterns each have a different underlying grid all based on one circle being divided into eight. Once the pattern is constructed, you will see how to trace, transfer and tile the pattern in to a bigger composition.
I will also provide alternative tilings and variations so that you can create a final composition of your choice. I will complete each unit by showing you how I use watercolour pencils and paints on watercolour paper to create a final colourful composition for each unit.

A budding artist and experienced educator interested in tapping in to my 12 years teaching experience to lead Islamic Geometry workshops in the UK or abroad and now online.
I am a former Secondary School Mathematics teacher with a passion for understanding and teaching Islamic Geometric pattern. My interest in geometry was something I was able to share with my students throughout my 12 years of teaching. In 2013, I began learning to construct Islamic Geometric patterns more formerly when I attended Saturday courses with Adam Williamson and Richard Henry at Art of Islamic Pattern. Following several courses with them, I began painting too. Having a creative outlet had always been a part of my life since GCSE and A level Art.
In January 2015, I moved to Morocco, to learn Arabic at the American & Arabic Language Centre in Fes (ALC & ALIF). I specifically chose this wonderful city because of its inspirational surroundings. My geometry and painting continued and evolved throughout my year there. In September 2015, I taught fellow students, both Moroccan and foreign, how to construct the patterns they were surrounded by. The weekly workshops in the ALC & ALIF Riad in the heart of the Medina were a great success. A seed had been planted for something I could pursue back home in London.
In January 2016, I returned home and set about making Islamic Geometry Workshops a reality in the west of London. To date, I have lead workshops for adults as well as for children at Harrow Arts Centre, OPEN Ealing, The Art Space at Cass Art Kingston, Leeds University and now Udemy.
