Ahmed introduces a 20-video series on Egyptian Arabic verbs and grammar, with pdf drills on the top 20 verbs, example sentences, conjugations, and practice exercises.
Explore hollow verbs in Egyptian Arabic, three-letter verbs with a long middle vowel, and how the perfect past tense interacts with the imperfect for first- and second-person forms.
Explore the bare imperfect el-mughara in Egyptian Arabic, showing prefix and suffix conjugations with akel across na, e, oo, and ho wa, and note its distinct usages to come.
Explore Egyptian Arabic imperfect as a conjugated infinitive, how it marks present or future, and its usages with examples like I want to eat and would you like to eat.
This course is aimed at students who either have an intermediate or above level in Egyptian Arabic, or for those who are already advanced in a different variety of Arabic, but want to understand the differences between that variety and Egyptian Arabic.
It's crucial to understand the differences between the different tenses and forms. They can be daunting at first, but once you fully understand them, the road of learning Egyptian Arabic will be paved and clear.
For example, the imperfect or المضارع in Egyptian Arabic is different from that of FusHa/Modern Standard Arabic (MSA). While it's the present tense in MSA, it is not in EA.
How to study from this course:
Each video is accompanied by a PDF file of the top 20 verbs in Egyptian Arabic. Each one of these PDFs includes basic and extensive conjugations of the verb.
1. Watch each video, and just go over all 20 verbs and the example sentences only, not the conjugation tables.
2. Once you've gone over all the videos, start watching them again, but this time, start working on the basic conjugations of the perfect tense, both in the affirmative and negative.
3. When you've gone over all the videos for the second time, start watching them again. This time, start working on the basic conjugations of the imperfect.
4. Then re-watch the videos, while working on the conjugations of the active participle.
5. Finally, watch the videos, while working on the complex conjugation tables.
Happy learning!
