eBGp Express Course

External BGP from First Principles to a Working 4-Router Lab
Last updated 9/2026
English

What you'll learn

  • Explain what an autonomous system is, why BGP exists alongside IGPs, and how AS_PATH prevents routing loops.
  • Identify the four BGP message types and the six neighbor states, and use them to troubleshoot peerings that won't establish.
  • Advertise prefixes with the network command, then read the neighbor table, BGP table, and IP routing table to confirm the routes work.
  • Summarize contiguous prefixes with aggregate-address (with and without summary-only) and explain the Null0 discard route.

Course content

4 sections • 10 lectures • 2h 19m total length
  • Introduction to Course7:16

Requirements

  • Solid understanding of IPv4 addressing and subnetting.
  • Working knowledge of static routing.
  • Experience with at least one IGP, such as OSPF or EIGRP.
  • Comfort with the Cisco IOS command line, plus lab access to four routers running Cisco IOS or IOS-XE (CML, EVE-NG, GNS3, or physical gear). Packet Tracer works for practice, but its output differs from real IOS.

Description

eBGP Express is a self-paced, hands-on course that teaches external BGP from first principles to a working four-router lab. You'll start with the foundations: autonomous systems, the path-vector model, AS_PATH loop prevention, message types, path attributes, and best-path selection. Next, you'll learn what must be true for a peering to form, how to read the neighbor state machine, and how to verify and troubleshoot sessions on Cisco IOS/IOS-XE. Then you'll originate prefixes with the network command, summarize contiguous address space with aggregate-address and summary-only, and understand the Null0 discard route. Finally, you'll build a four-router, four-AS lab from a blank configuration, trace AS_PATH and next-hop changes across three AS boundaries, then break the lab on purpose and fix it. Following the LAZ philosophy, "Lab Your Way to Success," nearly everything is delivered as hands-on practice, because reading builds vocabulary but labbing builds skill. The course takes roughly five hours in total, includes a knowledge check and command quick reference, and works with CML, EVE-NG, GNS3, or physical gear. Annotated sample output and a clear troubleshooting table keep you moving, while every command you type builds real, lasting confidence. Whether you're preparing for the CCNP Enterprise track, where ENCOR and ENARSI both expect BGP fluency, or simply want to understand how the internet is put together, you'll leave with practical, job-ready skills you can apply on real networks.

Your Cisco Instructor,

Laz Diaz (The IP Master)

Who this course is for:

  • Network engineers who need to configure, verify, and troubleshoot eBGP on Cisco IOS/IOS-XE.
  • Students and certification candidates moving toward the CCNP Enterprise track (ENCOR and ENARSI).
  • Engineers who already know OSPF or EIGRP and want to learn how routing works between organizations.
  • Anyone curious about how the internet's independent networks are connected and how routes are shared between them.
