This is an introduction to the course, where you will learn how to write the story that is in your heart. Even if you are a beginner, you will learn to write like a pro!
Understand different genres and subgenres to determine the best fit for your story.
We will explore fiction, non-fiction (memoir), and essays, focusing on the role of character and transformation.
Begin the journey of scouring your memory and pulling important moments of your life to create the scenes that will become the building blocks of interesting stories.
Whether you write fiction or memoirs or essays, learning the basics of using your own experience as a starting point will jump-start your writing from a story where things happen to one filled with life and emotional hooks.
This module will take you through a fun memory-finding exercise that will get you excited to jump into your story and begin writing!
You will learn about scenes and the importance of creating scenes that pull the reader into a story rather than tell the reader a story. Details!! Stories are all about details. Learn why the more specific you are, the better your writing will become.
Use Story Structure to Plot Your Scenes and Build a Completing Story.
After choosing the correct genre, brainstorming key scenes, and knowing your characters, you are ready to plot those key points into a story structure that will help you create a compelling read.
In this module, we will go over:
The Hero's Journey as outlined by Christopher Vogler.
The Inner Journey, as explained by Michael Hauge, will walk you through a movie and show you how the writer blended both the outer and the inner journey into a rewarding, audience-capturing success, and how you can reproduce this in your own story.
Deeper discussion scenes and sequels
Activity to get you to plot your own scenes into the structure that prepares you to begin writing your story in an organized and logical sequence.
Don't Stress About Grammar, Spelling or Vocabulary. Not having a great command of writing and language scares away too many people who have great stories to tell. I don't want this to be an issue for you. I also don't want you to have to invest in an expensive ghostwriter when you can write your own story and enjoy the process.
In this module, I will cover some basics of grammar - it is not intended to be a semester long, boring class on grammar, but just some pointers that will transform your writing into clear, readable, interesting writing.
The Module will cover:
Grammar: Using strong verbs, using specific language, avoiding adverbs, correcting fragments and learning why they occur and how to fix them, correcting run-on sentences.
Vocabulary: tips to build your vocabulary and how to choose language that is appropriate.
Spelling: We will discuss why this is a non-issue. However, we will examine common spelling problems, such as homonyms and word choice errors.
Lastly, I have some book recommendations for you to brush up on grammar even more.
Do You Need an Editor?
In this module, we will discuss the types of editors and why you might or might not need an editor when you finish your story.
Types of editors: Developmental editors, Line editors, Copy editors. Learn what each type of editor does and how they can help you improve your story.
