Welcome to the course!. In this quick introduction i will show you everything we will be seeing, our goals and curriculum.
In this lesson i will talk about the method we will be using to kit-bashing an illustration, as well as going more into detail about what the curriculum will cover exactly.
In the appended file .zip file you will encounter the .svg file with the assets as well as the final project in different stages. There is also a text document with links to places where you can learn more about everything we talked about.
In this unit you'll learn the basics of Inkscape, as well as the most common tools and techniques for rendering your sketches.
Learn the user interface and the basics of how to handle yourself in Inkscape.
Objects are the way Inkscape handles the shapes you use to illustrate anything, in this lesson you'll learn the basics about them.
Path are the other half that makes up the drawing process inside Inkscape. In this lesson you'll learn what they are and how to use them.
Here are a list of tips that i heavily encourage you to keep in mind at the moment of working with Inkscape.
Learn the most common boolean operations uses and techniques for illustration.
Learn how to use two of the most important features for Illustration in general, Groups and Clips.
This lesson is a gentle introduction to the basic conceps behind rendering, light and shadow.
In this lesson you'll be able to download the resources and exercice files belonging to the Inkscape mini-course.
In this lesson we will go back to take a look at the asset pack i briefly show you in the Methodology introduction. Now i will go more in depth about how to actually use some of the assets.
In this and the next lesson i will show you how to make your own assets. In this lesson in particular i will deal with the more general details you have to keep in mind.
Now that you know the general ideas behind making an asset pack i want to go over how build the actual assets.
This next unit will not only show you how to build the example background but also show you the necesary fundamentals of composition that you need to make the best possible illustration.
Sketches or thumbnails are extremelly important for making better background, in this lesson i will talk about that and start the project by making a quick sketch inside Inkscape itself.
Now it's time to actually start to kit-bash the illustration by using the sketch made in the previous lesson as a guide.
Let's continue with the illustration by add more assets and detail and talk about some design principles that will help you make better backgrounds in general.
Color is one of the most important parts of any illustration, in this lesson i will talk about how to pick great colors easily by using a simplified version of the theory of color.
We are almost done with the illustration, but we still need to give it some final touches.
In this lesson we will finally finish the illustration by adding light and shadow, but not before talking a bit about the theory.
Real time version of the Sketching lesson for those who want to follow along.
Real time version of the refining lesson.
Real time version of the Set Dressing lesson.
Real time version of the coloring lesson.
Real time version of the final touches lesson.
Real time version of the light and shadow lesson.
Congratulations!. You finished the course. In this lesson i will go over the next steps that you should take if you want to keep learning.

Hello and welcome to this course on Cartoon Background Design! My name is Martin, and I'm so excited to share everything i know about a topic that is not commonly talked about - kit-bashing backgrounds. Kit-bashing involves using pre-made assets to build an illustration from the ground up.
My goal is that by the end of this course you are able to kit-bash something of the level of what you see in the example shown in the thumbnail and landing page of this course, even if youre a complete beginner, who can't draw.
And that's the thing, this course is ideal for complete beginner's who want to get started in the world of illustration and more specifically, background design, but who feel like the main barrier is that they can't draw.
There are two reasons, the first is that we are gonna draw everything with a keyboard and mouse (you won't need expensive tablets at all), we are gonna use the fantastic free vector illustration program, Inkscape. And this type of program allows us to draw everything using a normal, everyday keyboard and mouse. I've included a full mini-course that will teach you, not only everything you need to know to use Inkscape, but also the principles behind vector illustration in general.
And the second reason is that we are gonna illustrate by kit-bashing our backgrounds, we are gonna use a fairly beefy list of pre-made assets that i will provide, and we will assemble this background that you're seeing now, while learning all the fundamentals and theory that you need in a very concice and practical way. And all without you ever having to grab a pencil.
Now, if you could only use the assets that ive provided then you would be quite limited, no matter the quantity or flexibility of them, so i've also included a few lessons on how to expand and even create your own asset packs.
I want you to learn as much as possible from this course, so if you need any help, please don't hesitate to contact me through the course page, and I'll respond as quickly as possible.
I'm incredibly excited to get started, and I hope you are too! Let's dive in and have some fun!.
