In this DUID IPv6 course, students gain a comprehensive understanding of how DHCPv6 Unique Identifiers (DUIDs) function as the core mechanism for identifying clients within an IPv6 network. The course begins by explaining the purpose of DUIDs and why they are essential in replacing traditional MAC-based identification used in IPv4 DHCP. Students explore the different DUID formats—DUID-LLT, DUID-LL, and DUID-EN—learning how each is constructed, when it is generated, and which scenarios best fit each type.
Through hands-on configuration labs, students practice viewing, generating, and interpreting DUID values on various devices, giving them practical, real-world experience.
Another major learning objective is understanding how DHCPv6 servers use DUIDs to assign addresses, prefixes, and options. Students learn how to work in an IPv6 environments and how DUIDs impact long-term address planning and network design.
DUID provides consistent, reliable client identification in DHCPv6, enabling stable address assignments across reboots and hardware changes. It simplifies network management, supports long-term reservations, improves tracking and troubleshooting, and enhances overall IPv6 scalability by ensuring each device maintains a unique, persistent identifier for efficient DHCPv6 operations.
