Instructors Tim Froncek and Kevin DePree will walk you through everything you need to know to audition for Jazz Band. Even if you are in Jazz Band already this is a great tool to improve your skills.
Meet your new instructors:
Tim Froncek has been rightfully called one of the busiest drummers in West Michigan. Teacher, performer, director, lecturer, and judge are all roles that he plays in the world of jazz. He serves both as drummer and Musical Director for the Truth in Jazz Orchestra.
He has performed with such jazz greats as Woody Herman and The Thundering Herd, Bobby Shew, Bill Watrous, Randy Brecker, Phil Woods, Rufus Reid, Jon Faddis, Hal Galper, Clark Terry, John Patitucci, Bill Mays, John Clayton, Marcus Printup, Terry Gibbs, Wess Warmdaddy Anderson, David Fat Head Newman, Wycliffe Gordon, Brother Jack McDuff, Pearl Bailey, and Joe Williams – just to name a few.
An energetic performer loved by audiences, Tim is well known in the Midwest. But he also tours internationally with the Western Jazz Quartet, performing throughout the Americas, Europe, and Asia. He is the Musical Director for Grand Rapids Jazz Orchestra as well as TIJO, both of which are considered to be premier big bands in western Michigan.
As a teacher, Tim directs the jazz program at the Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp. He is a sought after affiliate professor at Grand Valley State University, teaches on the jazz studies faculty at Western Michigan University and is the director of the jazz band at Muskegon Community College.
“I have always been interested in jazz music,” Tim says, “because of the beat, the groove. That’s what drew me to drums.” In comparing the performance of classical music to jazz, he comments that he enjoys the spontaneity of jazz performance. “In jazz,” he says, “you are trying to recreate the written music, but also create something new at the same time.”
Kevin DePree
After graduating in 2007, DePree toured Europe with the Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp big band with director David Jenson. From that experience, DePree knew he had to make music part of his life forever. His love of music started with piano lessons when he was 7 years old. After about three years, his attention turned to drums and he got his first drum set when he was 10 years old. "It was a simple set - a $50 kid-sized set my Mom and Dad picked up at a street fair."
DePree is now working full time as a musician, educator, and music composer. His educational programs (STEAM skills assemblies & music education workshops) are supported by the State of Michigan through several grant programs including the Michigan Touring Program.
In this introductory lecture, Tim and Kevin will chat about the following topics. You will also hear some audio examples of the drums and cymbals used for playing Jazz.
Sticks, mallets, and brushes
Cymbals
Drums and tuning
Tim and Kevin chat about the Jazz Band audition process. If you have already taken an audition this may bring back some memories. If you have never auditioned for Jazz band, these are some important things to consider when preparing for one.
Tim and Kevin chat about the importance of warm ups. Warm ups develop your fluidity on the drums and help develop coordination of the drum set. Whenever you are working on a new warm up, start SLOW…. speed is not the goal. Getting comfortable with new patterns and coordination while being relaxed is the goal.
After you have completed watching this video, grab your sticks and get ready for your first set of drum set warm ups.

Notice how Tim lets the stick rebound off the cymbal? That is an important part of your ride sound.
Tim and Kevin chat about ways you can work on coordination. Some of the grooves you'll be working on can be very challenging if you have never worked on 3 way or 4 way coordination before.
Tips on how to practice coordination:
Start at a slow tempo
Count out loud (it helps you stay true to the page)
Learn the grooves one beat at a time
Take one of the instruments out (e.g. If you have a bass drum, snare drum, hi-hat, and ride cymbal part to play, remove the hi-hat to learn 3 of the four parts) You'll notice that in this section of, “Drumming into Jazz", we've written out the exercises with this in mind

The charts we have provided in "Drumming into Jazz" are very basic. In another situation you may see a chart that has a note for note drum set part written out. In most situations the chart is more of a guide for the drummer, to let you know what other people in the band are playing. Don't let the note reading bog you down. Just keep good time and focus on the section and ensemble hits.
Tim and Kevin chat about preparing and experiencing an audition. In the next lecture you will take a practice audition. We recommend you feel confidant in all the previous lectures before taking the practice audition. Once you have seen the charts in the practice audition you will not get the same experience of sight reading again, so only move on if you have done the work of ALL the previous worksheets and lectures.
If you are ready to take the practice audition make sure you have downloaded the practice audition PDF before starting the video.
Before taking the "Drumming into Jazz" practice audition, you will need the following:
Sticks & Brushes
Headphones to hear the play-along tracks clearly
Downloaded or printed Drumming into Jazz Practice Audition packet
We recommend waiting to take this audition until you have become comfortable with ALL previous lectures. The purpose of this is to simulate a real audition. Once you have seen the music it will lose the desired effect. If you are not ready for the audition but would like to move on to Section 11, go for it. You can complete this lecture later.
