Learning to draw a realistic apple with oil pastels is a great way to practice color layering and blending for fruit. Here is a step-by-step guide to achieving.

    Step 1: Sketching the Form

Start on a clean paper surface. Using a very light pastel or a simple pencil, lightly sketch the core shape of the apple. Don't worry about details yet—just capture the large, rounded form and the basic curve of the stem. Keep lines very faint so they can be covered easily.

    Step 2: Defining Color Fields

Before coloring the main fruit, apply your environment base. Following the composition in the thumbnail, roughly block in the top background field with a light yellow-green pastel. Do the same for the foreground table area with a medium blue. Don't blend yet; just define the ground and sky.

Step 3: Laying Down Warm Tones

Fill in the apple itself with its foundational colors. Apply a vibrant yellow-orange pastel to the top-center where the light will hit. For the rest of the body, apply a warm orange-red base. Use broad, circular strokes that follow the rounded form of the fruit.

Step 4: Creating Atmosphere and Blending

Now, use a clean finger or a blending stump to smooth out your background fields. Blend the light green in the upper part to create soft gradients and the medium blue below to create a seamless table surface. Ensure the edges around the apple shape are clean and define the silhouette.

Step 5: Layering for Volume and Richness

The key to a deep red apple is layering. Begin blending the base orange-red. Next, take a dark red or crimson pastel and apply it in circular motions, concentrating more color on the bottom and sides to create shadows. Blend this into the orange-red base, but make sure to preserve the central yellow-orange highlight for contrast.

Step 6: Final Details and Finishing Touches

With the form defined, refine the details. Use a dark brown pastel to draw the thick stem, connecting it to the central depression. Finally, use a deep blue or black to draw a sharp, clean reflection and shadow on the table right under the apple, and your oil pastel masterpiece is complete!
