Large/Wide paint brush = i use this just to sweep away excess pencil sitting on top of my artwork.
Tihoo electric eraser but you can use another brand.
X Acto-Gripster Knife = great for adding in small details, you can use another brand.
Masking tape = I use this just to tape around the edges of my work to create a clean border, I also tape my reference in place as explained during the course.
Colour print outs of your reference, I use 4 but you can use less
Pencil Sharpener.
I have attached three line drawings, one of my original line drawing, darker copy of the original and a computer generated version for this eye project to this section, please feel free to download them to study or to trace out and colour in as I explain my process during the course. Any questions, please feel free to ask.
1: Original line drawing is lighter due to the fact I don't want the graphite pencil to muddy up my colour pencils when colouring in, always try to keep your line drawing as light as you can.
2: Second line drawing is from the original line drawing but I have boosted up the contrast to help you study my line drawing easier. I wouldn't recommend printing this version onto your drawing surface, just use it for studying.
3: This version is a computer generated one and will have lots of details, if you have a light box or a window with plenty of light you could place this under your drawing surface and trace out the line drawing onto your drawing surface and practice colouring in. You could also use the tracing down technique within this course to transfer your image onto your drawing surface.
PLEASE KINDLY NOTE:
I am unable to provide a copy of the original photo reference due to the copyright attached to the image but I am happy to send you a link to the website I purchased the photo from, it cost me around $30.
If you don't wish to buy the image please feel free to screen shot my final drawing and use that.
If you have any further questions please ask
I wanted to talk a little bit about Value and its importance, some of you might be now thinking “what is Value” and “why is it important”? Value is one of the seven most common elements of art, which include.
Value
Line
Shape
Form
Texture
Colour
Space
Light defines objects and enables us to see things. Artists are able to create the illusion of light using a wide range of different tonal and colour values. Value defines how light or dark a given colour or hue can be. Values are best understood when visualized as a scale or gradient. Here is the value scale for this grey tone, it ranges from pure white to absolute black, with a number of grey tones in between. Any hue or tone has a similar scale from dark to light. Different values are created by lighting the hue, in this case adding white to it or by darkening it with black. When an artwork has many tones in between white and black it is considered to be of low contrast, for instance, in this photo notice how many different shades of grey there are. A high contrast image on the other hand would have very few tonal values between black and white, like this photograph. The texture of an objects surface can play a role in how we see value. In this photograph notice how the water droplets on the leaf create areas of dramatic contrast between light and dark, compared to this photo, the surface area looks doll the light giving the photo much less contrast. The different ways artists create lines and imply textures can also affect how we perceive value. Notice how heavy and dark the black is in this drawing, also notice how some certain areas smoothly transition from dark to light. In this drawing the blacks are nowhere near as dark, notice also how the shading isn’t as nicely blended. The next time you’re looking at a photograph, painting or drawing, try to notice how the artist is rendering value, and when your creating your own artwork, practice creating value scales with a Varity of different mediums and hues, so your artwork shines in its own unique way.
I have attached a downloadable template to this lecture for you to print off and colour in to help you visualise and understand your value scale and gradients. Once you understand this more clearly it will enable you to use Value more clearly within your artwork. I have also included a copy of my value study, you can download this image to study. If you look closely and look at the different values in the eye and surrounding areas it will help give you a guide as to what pencil values to use in your project.
LET VALUE LEAD
Of the three elements of colour (value, hue, saturation) value provides the most information and is therefor the most important aspect when matching colours. Get your values right, any you're winning.
Any questions on this topic, please feel free to ask.
Tracing down is a term or technique that allows you to transfer your designs from a photo, sketch, pattern, template or free-hand to most surfaces. It helps make a clean crisp tracing onto your drawing surface which can be easily erased. It is a great technique that many artists use for all kinds of mediums, such as, colour pencil, watercolour painting, fabric painting, fine arts, commercial and graphic arts. Try it out and see what you think, its a great tool to have in your back pocket!
It is said that the brain can see images that last for just 13 milliseconds. I have found that by using this technique during my art projects it has helped me identify areas of my photo reference correctly rather than allowing my brain to trick me with misinformation, this allows me to draw, paint what I see, not what I think I see. Of course you should still express yourself as an artist, you might not wish to become a human photocopier, but if you wish for something to look photo realistic, you must look at your reference closely and this technique will help you achieve fantastic results.
Congratulations, you made it through to the end of the course!
