A quick opening to the course, Drawing Eyes, this video explores the power of the eyes and capturing them, how important they are for communication and how captivating they are in art. Let's level up your drawing and teach you how to capture the eyes in stunning works of art.
Hello from the instructor, Jonathan Simon, who offers a few brief words about the course, drawing concepts and his teaching style and methodology.
In this short video, I explain why I am qualified to teach this online course, and therefore, why the course will be informative and helpful to you.
I have 30 years' professional experience in the field, producing illustrations and art for various magazines and businesses, as well as creating commissioned art, and having work featured in renowned galleries across the United States.
I have formal education in the field, including a BFA from Memphis College of Art and Design and an MFA from the New York Academy of Art. In addition, I have extensive anatomical training and I studied for two years at Water Street Atelier, now called Grand Central Academy.
I am an experienced art educator, having taught drawing, painting and illustration at prominent schools such as the New Hampshire Institute of Art and Southeastern University, where I helped establish the current art program. I have held workshops and taught private lessons throughout the Southeast. Not only do I have the tools and techniques necessary to thoroughly understand basic and advanced concepts of art from my educational and professional experience, but I have a proven track record of successfully teaching art to all ages and levels of students.

Students will follow along with Jonathan in this drawing demonstration, learning how to draw a 3/4 view of the head, emphasizing correct eye placement and proportions for this view. Students will learn a basic proportion system for laying out a head/face in 3/4 view, including proper placement for the eyes. Concepts of the eyes as a plane, placement of the eyes, and head proportions will also be covered.
Students will follow along with Jonathan in this drawing demonstration, learning how to draw a side view of the head, emphasizing correct eye placement and proportions for this view. Students will learn a basic proportion system for laying out the head/face in side view, including proper placement for the eyes. Concepts of the eyes as a plane, placement of the eyes, and head proportions will also be covered.
Students will follow along with Jonathan in this drawing demonstration, learning essential concepts that offer a more in-depth understanding of the eyes as planes and the structure of those planes. Again, building from the eyeball as a sphere, we will draw and shade a realistic looking eyeball in light. Students will learn to draw with values using lights, highlights, midtones, darks, shadows, and contrast. They will also learn how to approach shading and shading techniques, and how to draw the eye as “wet,” capturing a lifelike feel.
Students will follow along with Jonathan in this drawing demonstration, learning how to draw the eye, iris and pupil with proper scale, alignment, placement, and proportions. The pupil will be further discussed in relation to how it illustrates emotions, as well as how to capture a pupil’s dilation (larger) and constriction (smaller).

Students will follow along with Jonathan in this drawing demonstration, learning concepts for rendering the contours, angles, and structure of the overall shape of the eye opening, and how this shape is created by the structure of the eye and eyelids.
In this lecture, students will follow along with Jonathan’s digital drawing demonstration as they review real examples of eyes. He will draw over them digitally as he demonstrates how the previous drawing concepts taught in Lecture 21 “Drawing Eyelids: Eye Opening Shape & Angle” apply here. Included are examples of models of different ages, genders, and ethnicities, with varying types of eyes and facial features. Students will gain an even greater understand of drawing the structure, angle and shape of the eye opening.
