The video will show you how to install the Paintology app
For many drawings we want to extract an accurate outline of the reference image. We do this by first loading the reference image into Paintology.
We need to set the background color of our drawing before we embark on the drawing. This video will show you how.
The shade brush tool is one of the most versatile brushes found in the app and this is a quick guide on how to use this brush.
In the same manner as any traditional painting, we are going to do a quick blocking of colors for this drawing. This is aided by the Trace mode of the Paintology. You will need to load the reference image and set the background color. The previous section will show you videos on how to do this. The reference image can be found in the Resources section.
We start off doing the blocking around the head which is the most prominent feature of the bird. Make use of the trace bar and the color picker to make an accurate representation of the eagle. Remember, we are doing this fast since we are not adding details which will be done later in the stages 1, 2 and 3.
In the Stage 1 of this drawing following the blocking we are going to add as much details to the eagle's head especially the striking features of the eyes and beak. Don't worry about how we are going to achieve the feathery effect, this comes about by applying one color after another.
You may want to stay in the trace mode, so you can always refer to the reference image within the app. This is fine if you are starting out and want to get more comfortable with the whole drawing process.
We are now continuously refining areas of the drawing that needs improvement. In my case, I need to white out more of the eagle's head, make the beak more uniform in color, reduce the eye region and add more contrast to the areas around the beak. You may have different areas of your drawing that needs more touching up.
In this final stage, I am going over sharpening the feathers by zooming in. You don't have to follow the reference image exactly, you can create the illusion of the feathers using the shade brush tool set to a lower brush size.
Congratulations if you have come this far. Don't worry if you have not achieved the drawing that you were looking for, this all comes with practice. You want to submit your drawing to the instructor to get better advise and helpful tips that you can apply to your next drawing.
I suggest you do this exercise after every drawing. Don't worry if you did not get everything right on your first try. Practice will definitely make your drawings improve in time.
Compare your drawing with the reference image or even the one that I did and see where you may have skipped or missed out. Then try to go over this area again. However, after one or two attempts and you are still unable to get it right, I would recommend that you continue with more drawings as your techniques improve over time.
You should always get feedback on your drawings as this will help you to progress further.
