In this drawing, we extend on our traced mode of drawings (see previous courses in the Resources section), and do most of the drawing by freehand.

While the traced mode of drawing is an effective way to learn drawing strokes and pick out tones, you can extend your drawing skills further by freehand drawing.

Drawing should be fun and easy and the Paintology app has addressed this by it's intuitive interface for all users to start drawing once installed on their android phone or tablet.

Description

In this drawing, we are going to draw this portrait couple using the free Paintology drawing app. The app is available for free from the Google play store, you just need an android phone or tablet.

This is a far more natural process of drawing than using digital tools. The opacity setting of the brush allows you to build up the tones with each stroke much like using a colored pencil and paper. This method of drawing feels like actual drawing without always having to dive into the tools section. You can rapidly build tones, colors, textures required for great drawings without the extensive tools. Focus more on your actual drawing than always having to access tools.

Mastery of these skills will allow you to create photo realistic drawings with ease and much faster than using tools. You can carry these fundamental skills to other art mediums too.

We first draw the outline and do some blocking of colors using the traced mode of the drawing in the Paintology app. In this way, we can get better accuracy of the shape and form, especially the faces. With the color picker we can translate the exact colors that are in the original image and transfer to our own drawing canvas.

After the outline/blocking, we do the complete drawing by freehand. This will help you to increase your freehand drawing techniques as well as the application of tones in a drawing.
