In this drawing we are going to draw this portrait of the famous hosts of the morning breakfast news show by the BBC. This was handpicked for this drawing session in order for you to understand the changing color tones on faces which is fundamental to good portrait drawings.
You will appreciate the subtle differences in the tonal values of a drawing and also improve your overall drawing strokes.
We stick to one brush tool for most part of the drawing, making it easier for the novice students to follow.
If you are not getting the results you are looking for, try to break down the tasks into smaller segments for example, just focus on the eyes and then come and try something different. In this way, you will allow yourself room for improvement.

This video is a quick guide on installing the app and getting started with Paintology
Loading the reference image into the Paintology canvas to enable you find tones using the color picker and also create accurate outlines for drawings.
The blocking and outline of the drawing is the first step to this drawing. I show you how you do this with Paintology.
If you are unfamiliar with the Paintology app with regards to loading and tracing the outline of the image, please go through the previous section on the how to videos.
Drawing the outlines is also easier by switching to the Gray scale which is also shown.
I have provided the reference image for this drawing in the Resources section for your convenience.
Try to capture enough information at this stage so that we have enough to work on the subsequent drawing. The areas that you should focus on, should be the eyes, nose, lips and the tones around the face.
In this stage of the drawing, we focus on drawing by freehand without any aids such as the traced option of the app. Although, if you are new to Paintology, you can continue to use this option until you become more comfortable.
The reference image which we refer to during the drawing can be hosted on another tablet, on the TV or printed. In hindsight, I did not take into account the differences in color variations of the different tablets and this can affect the color tones for the face that you have previously selected during blocking. Tip: keep this in mind when you use another medium as reference for your drawing, since it will undeniably change and you need to compensate for this.
The BBC logo was completed with some accuracy by using the 'straight lines' option which you will clearly see in the video.
Hope you took away a few lessons from this drawing so you can apply to your other drawings.
