The objective of the course is to stimulate students to become cultural explorers in the own communities. To discover music traditions outside of the normal day-to-day music heard on mass media. In the event that their community is small with a minimum of diversity then they are encourage to explore their own cultural family background and heritage.

David Salisbury is a composer, arranger, performer and ethnomusicologist with a background that includes international jazz and world music performances. As an ethnomusicologist his expertise is in Talempong, a form of indigenous music in West Sumatra. In 1994 he studied Talempong with master musician Pak Islamidar while doing his PhD fieldwork in West Sumatra. He completed a Bachelor of Music in composition and arranging at Berklee College, Boston, USA and a Master of Arts in Ethnomusicology at San Diego University. His performing highlights include opening and support act for US jazz artist Stanley Turrentine, folk pop performer Jim Stafford as well as famed bassist of the Bill Evans Trio, Chuck Israel.
