Early feedback for "Domain Name Essentials"....

In this course you'll learn how to choose the perfect domain name for your circumstances.

I've registered some great domain names, and some duds, since my first one in 1997 so hopefully I can pass on some tips! The main bulk of the course is section two where I cover many different tips, tricks, ideas, suggestions and tools for brainstorming the best domain name. I've tried to be thorough and not leave anything out, so this course is ideal for beginners but more experienced people may also find value in it.

In section three we look at some more advanced concepts such as checking whether or not a website previously existed at a domain name and whether it had backlinks. I show you how to check the website content and backlinks to see whether or not they may have attracted a search engine ranking penalty because that could negatively affect your ability to rank new content at the domain name.

I've tried to make "Domain Name Essentials" short, concise and yet comprehensive and valuable. I welcome all feedback and suggestions.

After taking this course you will have learned all about how domain names work and how to choose the best one for you.

For several reasons, a shorter domain name is better. In this lecture, the reasons are explained.

Why Shorter Is Better

Great domain names are memorable, but also indicate what visitors can expect to find at the websites. This lecture uses examples of domains that successfully achieve both.

Make It Memorable

When choosing a domain name, people often ignore the ability to pronounce and spell it. This lecture explains why it's important to perform the "radio commercial" and "tell a friend" tests on any domain name you're considering registering.

A Great Domain Is Easy To Say And Spell

A famous web giant has registered multiple mis-spellings of its domain name. Who is it, and why did they do it? Find out in this lecture.

Register Mis-spellings

Using slang and hyphens in domain names leads to confusion and is best avoided.

Avoid Slang And Hyphens

In the past, keyword-rich domains helped boost a website's search engine rankings. Does that still hold true, and, if so, should you pick a domain name with keywords in it?

To Use Keywords, Or Not To Use Keywords

While not always a perfect alternative, synonyms can help you to brainstorm domain name variations you may not have otherwise considered.

A very simple way to find available domain name variations of already registered domains is to add a Pronoun or Pluralize the domain name. In this lecture I show you examples.

Pronouns And Plurals

There are a vast multitude of domain name extensions available today, but which one should you try to register, and why?

Which Extension To Use?

If your new Internet business or website venture is going to be geo-specific, should you register a geo-specific domain or domain name extension? Find out in this lecture.

Geo-Specific Where Appropriate

It's much better to avoid a potential trademark dispute over domain name ownership than to resolve an existing one! Along with several examples of trademark disputes involving domain names, I'll provide links to websites that let you search for trademarks.

Avoid Trademarks

In section three we look in detail at how to find out whether or not a domain name is associated with a previous website or backlinks, but the issue is so important I raise it here as a point of interest.

Check For Previous Registration

Ask yourself this "Big Question" before registering a new domain name for a new business or website.

The Big Question...

Some people like to brainstorm domains using online tools, so I visit several popular ones for you in this lecture.

+ Expired Domains
5 lectures 18:29

An expired domain is one that was previously owned and has been allowed to expire. Should you register one of these domains?

Preview 01:29

There are multiple points in favour and against buying an expired domain. All registrable domain names are potentially expired domains, especially ones with older extensions, so it's important to consider the possible benefits and drawbacks.

Preview 03:55

What happens to domain names that expire? You may be surprised to learn that a lot of the time they are auctioned off. I'll show you where in this lecture.

Registrars Offer Domains At Auctions Sites!

Registering a domain name which once had a website with a toxic backlink profile can make it very hard to rank any new content you put at that domain name. In this lecture I'll show you how to check whether a domain had a website with a bad backlink profile for free.

How To Check For Toxic Backlinks

In addition to checking the backlink profile of any previous website, we should also check the content of the website itself. Both the content and the backlink profile can generate ranking penalties, and can therefore potentially affect your ability to rank new content. In this lecture I show you two free ways to check the content of a site that previously existed at a domain name.
