Description
The course offers an extensive knowledge and trains students in basics of counselling skills which they can use at different settings. This course will equip students be effective trained Public Health counsellors with adequate communication and development skills. Additionally, students will enhance self-awareness and reflective abilities that are highly valued in a range of organizations and personal life situations. The course will equip the students to be able to make a difference in people's lives with a positive relationship.
In this course you will learn the following topics:
Understand public health and its core functions
Understand the purpose for public health
Understand health, types of health and determinants of health
Self-reflection questions of life. These are questions that will help you to have a positive thought of life and can eventually help you to guide your clients.
Basics of counselling. This topic will cover skills such as attending, silence, reflecting, paraphrasing, clarifying and use of questions, focusing, building rapport, summarizing and Immediacy.
Types of Counselling focusing only on client centered, directive and problem-solving skills
Listening skills covering how the counsellor should listen and what to avoid.
Client counsellor relationship will enable the students to be able to build positive rapport with clients
Ethics in counselling will enable students to be aware of ethics to uphold in this profession
Key qualities of a counsellor will enable students to understand the qualities which they need to have in order to be successful counsellors
Examples of open ended and closed ended questions
Learn about the importance of HIV counselling and testing
Learn about HIV and AIDS disease progression and how it is measured
Interpreting HIV test results and measures to follow following the test results
Learn about reproductive health issues and mental health issues of concern
What to do next after this course completion
This course is for all levels of experience. However, students should be able to understand English, be able to read and write in English, have good network connection for effective learning with either a phone, tablet or laptop.
