Did you know that the first sale made completely online was in 1994 by a person named Dan Kohn who sold a CD for $12.90 on the web called Net market?, a CD called 10 Summoners Tales in by Sting?
- Contrary to popular belief it was not weed.
Since then online sales have contributed tremendously to a global multi-billion-dollar industry.
But why?
E-commerce is generally cheaper than brick-and-mortar sales and more convenient and more accessible to, open anytime and it has introduced man roles for e-marketers and distributors and introduced pathways to learning which is what you are doing today in this module.
E-commence the process of buying and selling of goods and services Online
most of ecommerce sales are:
•tangible or physical products:
•Digital products like ebooks and online learning that you are commencing on learning this module, online artwork, online wallpapers, NFTs
•Cryptocurrency traders
•services like vacations, online counselling, scheduling doctors’ appointments etc
´and
•Software as the website: such as Canva, word press, Shopify etc offering ready-made templates to do commerce with
´And in the modern world we live in , AI-assisted software
The whole ecommerce strategy has transformed the way we do business making it easier to transact.
´Some retailers like to maintain brick-and-mortar stores but still have an online presence to ensure they are meeting the demands of the world for e-commerce stores.
´E-commerce introduces your products and services that open your options to a wider market without the cost of having brick-and-mortar expenses.
´nowadays without the costs associated with running a store many millions of retailers offer online services, with this introduction means e-commerce stores are in the trillions. So to set themselves apart and get their specific customers' attention many e-commerce stores use search engine optimization or digital marketing to target ads specifically to their consumer segment.
Digital marketing is reaching consumers online through channels that aim to turn them into customers! it can be connecting, advertising, direct mailing, or any process that reaches the customer is known as digital marketing
´Digital marketing is any communication method or platform a business uses to reach their target audience online. such as search engines, websites, email, and social media platforms. if ecommerce aims to sell products the aim of digital marketing helps the business make that happen.
´but that's not all, Digital marketing helps businesses build trust, inspire loyalty and better service
´ Digital marketing strategies are to help businesses identify cost-effective methods to serve their customers and for digital marketers to learn strategies to help businesses by way of marketing to a specific audience and the right ads, and the right moments, and strategies to spread awareness for a business using social media
Common duties for a digital marketer may include:
•Conducting research to understand consumer or audience needs and the best way to reach them
•Planning, creating and managing content production, ad campaigns and lead-generation activities
•Publishing posts, articles and videos on the company's social media pages or website
•Tracking key performance indicators (KPIs) like social media shares, impressions and email click-through rates
•Using web analytic tools to measure website traffic and optimise search engine marketing, email marketing and display advertising campaigns
•Coordinating the design and functionality of a company website with designers and developers
•Creating and implementing a content strategy to meet a company's online marketing objectives
•Analyzing the results of digital marketing campaigns to identify what did and did not work
•Optimizing the structure and content for search engines to ensure a target audience finds a website
•Improving users' experience with digital channels and products
•Creating high-converting sales funnels that turn website visitors into buyers
•Using pay-per-click (PPC) marketing, social media marketing and influencer marketing to drive relevant traffic to a website
Now that you are familiar with these attributes of this module, Let’s begin by exploring ecommerce further, firstly what are the various ways to sell online?
Firstly, opening an ecommerce store doesn’t mean that you have to start with an already established complete commerce platform such as woo commerce, word-press, Shopify, Wix or other retailers
There are other places and platforms to trade if you’re getting established
Some Small businesses who want to limit costs, use places such as:
´Facebook marketplace
´E-bay
´Etsy
´gumtree
´ amazon
´To use as platform to sell their products.
Considerations:
Some marketplaces are a great starting point to get your product to be well known in your local community or globally if you want to ship. Physical products or start locally to increase brand awareness
There are pros and cons on each of these, firstly the risk factor in Facebook marketplace is high, while Ebay and Etsy stores and other marketplaces are more secure you would still need to pay to get your product sold, and if your product is not a trending search item, would be difficult to stand out unless you paid the advertising costs for it.
If you are intending to use Facebook marketplace for, drop shipping products which means direct to customer selling from supplier it will also be difficult to gain trust for consumers who want their product quickly, so you need to choose your platform to start selling wisely before you start.
Now that your familiar with the types of ways to sell lets jump into online store and use example of Shopify stores
Benefits vs costs of creating an online store
COsts
´Knowing how to create a store
´Ongoing running costs
´Updating and maintenance
´If you haven’t researched your products can be costly
Benefits:
´Websites are easier to find if you place it on the google directory – in fact better than apps
´More professional and trusted
´Can be easy to be found on google search
´Let's take a look at some websites that are Search engine optimized and easily findable with / and contain pages that show on google search results for discussion
´I use Shopify, example discussed on the next section
´However, some people can use AI store builder to build the ecommerce store or freelancers who can build a store and place drop shipping products.
´Regardless of method, those ways cant make your store findable on search engines, that’s something you would need to be involved in as well
