Explore digital illustration for beginners with a Halloween themed project, covering shading, lighting, and character design in Procreate, finishing a cute illustration and gaining an overview of the illustration process.
Create a two-point perspective scene centered on a bunk bed, adding magical lighting and layered details. Practice Baum's eye view and bird's eye view with base cubes and reference sketches.
Master the basics of illustration by turning lines into shapes, using shading to create form, and applying the seven elements of art—shape, form, space, texture, color, and value.
Explore why layers matter in art, from traditional watercolor transparency to digital workflows, and learn to build base shapes, shading, details, and adjustments across multiple layers.
Sketch a pumpkin character intuitively with short lines and a 6b pencil to stay loose. Shape mood and personality with ideas, accessories, and reference images for a Halloween illustration.
Sketch and refine a pumpkin character through multiple versions to reduce pressure and discover a strong design. Plan an instagram-friendly square layout with a horizon line and lighting before painting.
Build a pumpkin-inspired color palette with orange as the core, then use complementary hues and darker and lighter shades to craft a cohesive Halloween illustration.
Paint the base of a digital pumpkin by building the silhouette, carving eyes and mouth, and adding shadows and textures with clipping masks and layered brushes.
Learn to paint light on a pumpkin by building light and shading with layers, shader and liner brushes, blending moves, and inner glow to create a candle-lit glow and shadows.
Create headphones on a new layer, add base shapes and shading, and adjust their placement; then add glasses with shading, and finish by working on the background.
Build the background with multiple layers, adjust hue and brightness, and add a purple-tinted glow behind the pumpkin. Experiment with textures, shadows, and lighting to enhance mood and depth.
Review the elements of art, layering, and character design, and apply painting, shading, and lighting tips to illustrate simple objects. Upload your artwork to the class project.
Welcome to the "Digital Illustration Workshop for Beginners"!
In this course, you will be introduced to a basic illustration process and get a little bit of everything:
digital illustration basics,
shading basics,
lighting basics,
character design.
At the end, you will end up with a cool pumpkin illustration and a basic overview on the illustration process.
The course is perfect for beginners in illustration, who would love to get through an illustration process quickly but still learn a ton of new things.
A simple process and a basic overview can give you so much – you will get a grasp from what an illustrator does and get a bite from topics that you can deepen in the future. You can realize during the process what you need to learn a bit more about and find courses about those topics, but still not lose the fun of creating and getting a project done.
You will be guided through the process, have everything explained, we will go in baby steps, so even very beginners will be all set for a successful class project.
During the course I will be using an iPad and Procreate but you are free to follow me in any software. You will need a basic working knowledge of the program you will be working in – even though I will comment on every step I will make.
By the end of this course you will be ready to apply the knowledge in various scenarios and to illustrate simple objects or little characters on your own – not just pumpkins:)
So are you ready to start? Let’s get into it!
