I'm Andrew Murphy, and I've spent my entire career in tech. From an early age, I was thrust into leadership—in some ways, a fortunate situation that ended up moulding me into the person I am today.
Over the last decade, I’ve led various types of software development companies, including consultancies and product companies, and have confronted numerous challenges. I've worked alongside diverse cohorts of individuals, learning how to encourage, grow, develop, and influence them effectively.

The trick is not to suppress these feelings but to acknowledge them and not allow them to cripple our ability to take on new challenges.

Understanding the concept of Leadership Philosophy is essential to recognise the type of leader you will become and ensure you remain authentic to who you truly are. More often than not, those moments in my career where I felt most disconnected or disappointed revolved around times when my actions were not aligned with my Leadership Philosophy.
These moments of divergence from my core values and beliefs always made me feel most dissatisfied. Therefore, I have consistently strived to rise above such circumstances and comprehend my identity as a leader better, which in turn, is regulated by my Leadership Philosophy.
What is a Leadership Philosophy?
In the most rudimentary terms, it centres around your Core Values, Core Beliefs, and the Core Principles you create from them. It guides your actions, your interactions with others, the decisions you make, and how you foster growth in your surroundings. It lays the base for your leadership style and is significantly swayed by your Core Values and Core Beliefs.
Core Values and Core Beliefs
Core Values can be referred to as the elements necessary to you at the most fundamental human level, such as honesty, integrity, or trust. The times when you feel most hurt or violated are often when your Core Values have been breached, either by yourself or others.
Do the values of honesty, empathy, innovation, and resilience resonate with you? Do they drive who you are as a human being and ultimately, as a leader?
Core Beliefs are equally important for effective leadership. Do you believe that leading by example, influence, or vision brings out the best results as a leader? Do you prefer spending quality time with an individual, coaching, and developing them, or do you believe in bringing people together to develop as a team?
As you progress as a leader, you will notice that these Core Beliefs might need to be adjusted, and this is completely normal. The important step here is to recognise your starting point and your Core Beliefs, which aids in becoming an effective leader. Your Core Values are unlikely to change, however.
Turning Values and Beliefs into Action – Core Principles
Taking your Core Values and Core Beliefs and turning them into action forms the Core Principles for your Leadership Philosophy. For instance, if one of your Core Values is transparency, how can you incorporate Core Principles that encourage more transparent decision-making? If empathy is a Core Value, how can you ensure that all your decisions emphasise empathy?
Translating these Core Values and Core Beliefs into Core Principles requires some contemplation. If honesty or transparency is one of your Core Values, how about forming a Core Principle that revolves around the idea of never lying when a team member poses a question? If one of your Core Values is empathy, how about making a Core Principle that maps how your decisions might affect those around you?
Your list of Core Values, Core Beliefs, and Core Principles should be continuously evaluated, changed, added to, and grown. Your Core Values might remain the same throughout your career, but your Core Beliefs could sway based on experiences and circumstances, and that's perfectly normal.

Your Leadership Philosophy is essential to share with your team to show them the type of leader you are and what you deeply care about. This information holds immense value, and sharing it could lead to deeper connections and understanding within your team.

In order to assess your leadership skills effectively, let’s start by segregating them into four distinct categories - Technology, People, Business, and Delivery.
Technology: These are your technical skills related to your position. It’s the domain-specific knowledge that you possess.
People: This involves your interpersonal skills, relationship-building abilities, and how effectively you manage and deal with people.
Business: These are skills related to business understanding, strategy formulation and decision-making abilities.
Delivery: Skills pertaining to project management and execution fall under this category.
Now, reflect on each of these areas and rate yourself. Where do you excel and where do you fall short? It’s vital to be brutally honest with yourself during this exercise. After all, every leader has room for improvement.
Leadership Role Models
The next element of this reflective exercise is to identify a leader you admire. They could be within your current organisation or from a different industry altogether. Once you’ve picked this person, deeply consider the qualities you respect in them. Could it be their impeccable people skills or unmatched knowledge of the business? Notice how their unique strengths and potential weaknesses contribute to their leadership style.
Often, you'll notice that effective leaders maintain a healthy balance across all skill sets but excel particularly in one or two areas. It’s this balance and the specific area of excellence that makes them successful and admired by others.
Aspire and Inspire
Now comes the exciting part - drafting your leadership roadmap. From your self-assessment and your admiration for the other leader, start outlining the leader you wish to become. You might want to emulate certain traits of your chosen leader, compensate for some of their weaknesses, or build on your strengths. Start outlining strategies to build the skills you want to nurture and the milestones you want to achieve.
Remember to align your development plan with your Core Values and Core Beliefs. If a particular aspiration challenges your principles or conflicts with your team's morale, it might be beneficial to revisit and reassess those goals.
The End Goal
This reflective exercise is not intended to downplay your strengths or emphasise your weaknesses, nor is it about setting unrealistic expectations for yourself. It’s about self-awareness, recognising the leader you are today, and envisioning the leader you aspire to be.
Engage in this exercise not just once, but revisit it periodically to ensure your development aligns with your vision and make adjustments as necessary. Be patient with your progress. After all, leadership development is a journey that takes time.
