Depression is a common, serious mood disorder affecting millions worldwide, distinct from normal sadness and grief, with symptoms lasting at least two weeks and can lead to suicide.
Explore how depression arises from a combination of genetic, biological, environmental, and psychological factors, not simply a chemical imbalance, affecting people from childhood through older adulthood.
Identify the forms of depression, including major depression, persistent depressive disorder (dysthymia), postpartum and perinatal depression, seasonal affective disorder, psychotic depression, bipolar disorder with mania or hypomania, and mood conditions.
Major depression, or unipolar depression, features persistent sadness and anhedonia with fatigue, guilt, insomnia, and weight changes; psychotherapy and medication such as SSRIs help manage it.
Persistent depressive disorder, or dysthymia, is a chronic mood disorder with persistent sadness most of the day for years, lowering energy and self-esteem. Treatments combine medications like SSRIs with psychotherapy.
Seasonal affective disorder is a fall-winter depression with symptoms such as depressed mood, anhedonia, low energy, sleep and appetite changes, treated with light therapy, antidepressants, and psychotherapy.
Identify psychotic depression as major depressive disorder with psychotic features, detailing its depressive symptoms, delusions and hallucinations, risk factors, and treatment options including antidepressants, antipsychotics, and electroconvulsive therapy.
