Awareness of Death
gives us enormous energy
to not waste our life,
but to live it
as effectively as possible.
It is possible that you will feel
fear or sadness
when doing this meditation.
In a sense, that is good ...
it shows that you have taken
the ideas seriously and
have contemplated them well.
Also, it is important to get in touch
with how do you feel about death
so that you can work on
being prepared for it
when it happens.
However,
the purpose of the meditation is not
to make you frightened.
Just being afraid of death
is not helpful.
What is helpful is to be afraid
of dying with a
negative state of mind
and a lot of imprints on your mind
from negative actions
you have done in your life.
You need to get a strong sense
of how terrible it would be
to die like that,
so that you live your life wisely,
doing as many positive,
beneficial things as possible.
Also fear arises
because of clinging to the idea
of a permanent self ...
there is no such a thing,
this is a delusion
that just makes us suffer...
we are all one.
If we keep death in mind
in an easy, open way,
this clinging will gradually loosen,
allowing us to be mindful
and make every action positive
and beneficial,
for ourselves
and others.
The nine guided meditations should help you to realize how important it is to work on reducing our attachments to the things of this life, such as family and friends, possessions, and our body. You will also realize how important it is to take care of our mind and inner self, as that is the only thing that will continue after death. Taking care of the mind means working on decreasing the negative state of mind such as anger and attachment, and cultivating positive qualities such as faith, loving kindness, compassion, patience, and wisdom. As more often you repeat these meditations as more closer you will come to accept death and deal with death in our daily lives. When you realize that the worst what can happen today is that you will die, and you are ready for it, then how much easier it is to deal with all the problems and obstacles which come up on this day ... it took me years to practice on a daily basis to reach a state of mind where i act very relaxed to "heavy circumstances" in daily life ... Start practicing ... A more mindful life comes from reflecting on Death. We don’t like acknowledging our own mortality, even though we are one of the few conscious beings capable of conceptualizing it. We are bestowed with foresight and intuition about our futures, yet too often we cannot bring ourselves to talk about those waning moments that await us all. Rather than ignoring the end of our journey, we should use it as a lens with which to look at life. The meaning within the journey can be heightened in realizing that our story comes to an end. We can live with greater urgency. Not urgency as in rushing, but urgency as in it can help us to be as present as possible in the NOW.
