Learn pivots by initiating rotation from the lower body while aligning the head and spine, using small circular steps and hip turns to build control with a partner.
Set up the pivot on the front foot, pull the back hip back, wrap the ribs, and rotate the ribcage opposite the head, then practice separating weight shift from rotation.
Establish alignment by positioning the front hip, feeling opposition, and ribcage against the spine. Move to a partnered practice, separating second and rotation for a seamless two-person flow.
Practice drags by driving from the leg, using exaggerated country walks, and keeping the back safe while pushing hips for power. Explore drag variations with arm twists and spine rotation.
Practice against a wall to feel resistance while driving through a spinal twist, using the back foot and rib cage control with arms kept contained for spinal mobility.
Master solo practice for leads in drags by balancing weight on the front foot, pushing into the drag, and twisting your rib cage opposite the pelvis with a cane.
Practice maintaining a connection by keeping your back ribs hugged around your partner and sustaining the hug throughout the movement. Focus on posture and ensure space behind before you start.
Practice solo drills: perform a forward leg sweep, time on back, halftime walks forward and backward, and repeated sweeps every single time.
practice partnered drills focusing on forward and backward leg swings and leg sweeps, integrating a single-time walk to improve coordination and balance.
Master burst pivots, a variation on the piece, driving movement from the bottom right of the centerline to the top of the head while focusing on stability and leg twists.
Improve efficient posture through solo practice, emphasizing burst pivots, rib awareness, and a floating head toward the front of the feet, with relevation holds and four-count lowers.
Maintain a neutral pelvis, forward ribs, and neutral sternum with the head floating. Don't reach from the shoulders—push from the bottom and time your prep to land on three.
Concludes the course by inviting you to explore workshops in different cities, find your own dance style, and share your progress with us.
Ruth and Mike are known for their dramatic and flowing style of dancing to slow jazz and jazz blues. They are excited to share it with you:
Drape and Drag is our signature style of blues and slow jazz dancing. It is inspired by early dancers like Sandra Gibson and Albert Minns, as well as dances like the Strut, the Two-Step, and the Ballroom. We imbue this style with our own personality, so it has lots of striking shapes, smooth flow, rippling undulation, and underlying power. This course includes well-known Drape and Drag movements like drags and pivots, plus some of our favorite combinations.
Each lesson includes short practice videos. No partner? No problem- there are separate videos for practicing with a partner and by yourself, so you can work on this style even without a partner.
