Description
This comprehensive course is designed to give learners a thorough understanding of the fundamental concepts of data, information, and databases, which are at the heart of today’s digital world. We will begin by exploring the distinction between data and information—two terms often used interchangeably, yet differing significantly in meaning and function. Learners will understand how raw, unprocessed facts (data) are transformed into meaningful insights (information), and which of these is actually used in decision-making processes.
The course will delve into the importance of databases as essential tools in managing information efficiently. We will define what a database is, and how users can add, modify, or retrieve specific data based on their needs. We will also trace the evolution of databases since the 1960s, examining how they have grown in complexity and power over time.
In-depth modules will cover common database types such as relational, NoSQL, object-oriented, graph, time-series, NewSQL, and in-memory databases. Learners will study how relational databases use structured tables, how NoSQL handles unstructured data, and how different databases cater to specific applications. Concepts like vertical and horizontal scaling, time series data, and data access across networks will also be discussed.
Moreover, we will explore the role of a Database Management System (DBMS) in facilitating interaction between users and centralized databases, and whether companies rely on a single database type or multiple ones based on diverse needs. Lastly, the course will provide insights into the key factors businesses consider while selecting databases, and reinforce the idea that there's a suitable database type for every scenario.
