Data Visualization in Excel by Using ExTool
- Students will need the Excel software and will also need to download the ExTool Add-on Application from the ParaTool website. It would be helpful to know the basic Excel functions, but not necessary.
This course will teach students how to master their Excel skills by learning both basic and extended data visualization and business intelligence related functions using the ExTool Application. In the first section of the course, students will learn how to create the following data visualizations: 3D Surface Plot, Force Arrow Chart, Plot Pins on a Google Map, Plot Data on a Google Map, and Biomedical Batch Analysis Chart, Loss Analysis Chart, Scatter Plot, Multiple Stock Analysis Chart, Risk Analysis Map. The second section of the course will demonstrate the following functions: Air Quality Heat Map, Candlestick Chart, Stacked Area Line Chart, Colored China Air Quality Chart, Multiple Funnel Chart, Basic Radar Chart, Bar Negative Chart, Sized Pie Chart, Migration Map, Sankey Diagram, Stepped Waterfall Chart, and Funnel Align Chart. Through the mastery of these functions, users will be able to transform their data into beautiful, animated graphics that are easy to work with and understand.

Dr. Zhenyu Zhu is a senior data analyst, database specialist, and seasoned structural engineer. Hehas 20 years of experience using Excel with advanced data analysis and presentation functionalities and 10 years of programming experience with multiple languages—including Excel VBA. Over the years, he has served as the lead analytical engineer for multiple landscape bridge projects, most significantly the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge. During this time, he also implemented a cloud-based platform to facilitate data communication between multiple disciplinary workers of the design and construction project. The cloud-based platform has, hence, extended to other industrial fields and served as the infrastructure for all of the apps discussed within this course.
Jessica Keaton is a recent graduate of San Jose State University's MFA Creative Writing Program. Formally a college English instructor, she is now using her acquired writing skills in the tech industry on the ParaTool Marketing Team.
