This course is project based, meaning you will learn by applying new knowledge to a project. In this video you'll learn about the project, how we will approach it, and the materials you will need.
In this lesson you will learn about what type of collection you can choose as the subject of this data project. I'll give you ideas for what will work best, I'll show you what collection I'm going to use to demonstrate, and will give pointers for how to choose the most effective subject.
In this lesson we’re going to start a process of teasing out your subject and thinking about it in a broader way. Expand your thoughts about it and find associated imagery that will eventually be used to visually represent items in your collection.
In this lesson we’re going to use our mood board to inspire icons and shapes to represent our subject. You’ll be using your sketchbook and creating prototypes. I will show you how to change something representational to something more abstract, how to stretch your creative muscles and learn how exaggeration can help you create more dynamic marks and figures.
In this lesson we’re going to learn about scales and how to select and assign attributes to your collection to collect data on. You'll learn about nominal and ordinal scales and then work out all the attributes you can think of in each type of scale and then assign a numeric value to each.
In this lesson we’re going to gather inspiration on composition and look/feel of the final piece by looking at existing abstract works of art. You’ll learn some things about how to use aspects of the pieces to inform your piece without copying.
In this lesson you will explore different ways to define something visually (size/scale, color, shape, rotation, etc.) and then decide what visual definitions to use on your piece.
In this lesson you’re going to develop a legend for your piece so that (1) you can reference it to know how to illustrate each icon and (2) have as a reference for anyone viewing it so they can decipher its meaning.
Now it’s time to collect data! In this lesson you’ll go through your collection and for each item you will assign a numeric value from each of your scales and record it on the provided template (or one that you create yourself).
In this lesson you’re going to make a few thumbnail sketches of your composition. This is your opportunity to test out your ideas, the placement of your icons, colors you want to use, etc. By the end of the class you should have chosen your thumbnail that you like best and would like to use in the final piece.
In this lesson, you’ll use your data collection tool, your thumbnail, and your supplies and plot/draw/design your final piece.
In this class you will uncover unique and creative ways to illustrate data by cataloguing a collection of personal objects visually.
You will learn:
How to make an abstract piece of art out of data
How to develop a toolbox of unique and artistic data visualizations to apply to a dataset
How to catalogue a set of objects using scales of measurement
How to collect and organize data
Where to find inspiration and analyze existing works of art and utilize it's qualities in your piece without copying
How to develop compositional sketches to guide your final piece
What will result will be an abstract work of art that will not only look good, but will communicate something about your life!
Format
This is a project-based class, meaning you will be applying what you are learning by creating a project alongside me.
Who is this class for?
This class is for literally anyone. You don’t need to be a data expert or a seasoned artist. I will teach you what you need to know about data, and we are working with abstract shapes and marks, which have no rules and can be done by anyone who can harness their imagination.
What can I do with this skill?
The skills you learn in this class can be applied to any project where you are looking to turn something concrete into something abstract.
Data Professionals: Learn methods for generating creative ideas, adding unexpected flair to your data visualizations, and come up with fresh ideas for composition.
Designers or business professionals: Gain tools to approach information design through a creative lens.
Artists: Find a new entry point into art-making and learn new techniques to generate abstract works of art.
After this class you'll have a really fun art project you can do over and over in a million different ways with a million different subjects, visualizing your life with art.
